from jihadwatch:

"Shaherkani’s case sparked a huge controversy after International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer had said she would not be able to fight in a hijab, the traditional Muslim headscarf.

"Judo rules ban any head-covering on safety grounds.

"But Saudi officials had said their women – they have also sent 800m runner Sarah Attar – could only compete if they respected Islamic dress ...

"She was accompanied to the mat by her brother, who remained by her side throughout her media commitments.

"The teenager has only been practising judo for two years and has a blue belt. If not for her special invitation, she would never have qualified for the Olympics."

Double standard.

Olympics: Saudi judoka loses the fight but wins over many fans

LONDON // It was over in little more than a minute, but it will go down as one of the most memorable moments of the London Games.

A young judo fighter's decisive defeat on the mat yesterday is being hailed as a victory for women in Saudi Arabia, a step that seemed unimaginable not long ago.

Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani was one of just two women competing for Saudi Arabia at the Games, the first time the country has sent female athletes. And she was only able to compete in judo after a compromise between Olympic organisers, the international judo federation and Saudi officials that cleared the way for her to wear a modified hijab.

Even that was unacceptable to some, who said she was dishonouring herself by fighting in front of men, including the male referee and judges.

The crowd roared as Shahrkhani stepped onto the mat for her fight against Puerto Rico's Melissa Mojica wearing judo dress and what appeared to be a tight-fitting black cap.

The drama was not in seeing who would win. In a competition where everyone else holds a high level black belt, Shahrkhani has only attained a blue. Her father, Ali, an international judo referee, summed up the odds his daughter was facing.

"They are champions she is fighting, and my daughter, for her it is the first competition," he said.

The Olympic committee should have banned the Saudis and any other nation that refuses to allow women to participate in public sports and competitions. Inviting a couple of females who were no where near qualified was giving the Saudis a pass on their discrimination of women. This was NO help for the women in their counties.

Hijab victory for Saudi Olympic judoka
The debate over whether Saudi Arabia's female Judoka should be allowed to wear a hijab during competition has been resolved.

The International Olympic Committee has said Wojdan Shaherkani will now be allowed to wear a headscarf that does not compromise her safety.

It is the first time Saudi Arabia has allowed female athletes to compete at an Olympic Games.

I think it's deplorable that the Olympic Committee caved into the Saudi wishes. If a German or Brit or American athlete didn't meet the minimum qualifications, that athlete would not be admitted to participate.

And to further disregard safety concerns by wearing the hijab, it shows how we pander to the Muslims and this has got to stop. EVERYTHING in Islam is about respecting Islamic standards---what about the rules of the rest of the world?

It's disgraceful. When will this madness stop?

Although there is no standardized belt color rankings, the following indicate the kyu/dan rank from novice to expert in Europe, Canada and Australia, which should encompass Southwest Asia.

•White
•Yellow
•Orange
•Green
•Blue
•Brown
•Black
•White and Red
•Red

Blue is only half-way up the judo ladder.

What the Olympic committee did was deplorable. She was outmatched, with no qualifications to compete with anyone else. She was set up for a humiliating defeat, used as a pawn by the Olympic committee and Saudi leaders. They made the match into a joke.

What the Olympic Committee did was more of a disservice to those women in KSA. This only gave the KSA a chance to allow their men into the competition with NO consequence. They were planning on banning all KSA athletes, and this was their alternative!

Only by banning the KSA of all Athletes until they stop mistreating their females, will they have the right to participate in the Olympics.

This was not a step for women's rights, this was a step against women's rights.

LONDON (AP)— A female judo fighter from Saudi Arabia will be allowed to compete in the Olympics wearing a form of headscarf after a compromise was reached that respects the “cultural sensitivity” of the Muslim kingdom.

Check the U.S. State Dept's chart of "Countries of Concern"; Saudi got a Bronze -- N. Korea took the gold -- for its record of human rights violations.
