As a nurse in a nursing home, I support this proposal. For way too long, owners of nursing homes in KY have put profits over the needs of the residents and staff.

I am also a nurse, have been for over 17 yrs. We need standards on minimum staffing. On average I have 23 patients I am responsible for on dayshift. I usually only have 1.5 CNA's and it is difficult for staff to fully meet the needs of the elderly patients. More often then not these Administrators, Social Workers, and Admission coordinators hold no nursing license or any medical certification. All they see when they admit patients to a long term facility is $$$. Each patient needs individual consideration upon placement.

I'm not being gullible.........I am a licensed social worker. I have worked at several long term care facilities in my career; however, I am not so naive that I don't see the need for reforms. Some facilities truly are understaffed. I don't disagree with the proposal mentioned in the Courier-Journal article. That being said, I have also worked as an admissions director in long term care and never admitted someone based on how much money they had. Every patient I admitted was assessed by me and the director of nursing to see if the facility could provide the care he/she required. The final decision to admit someone was made by an entire team of people, not just the admissions director or administrator. I can only speak of the facilities that I worked in. Every nursing home has their own admissions policy.

All I know is Rolling hIlls i8n New Albany hired my sister's ex gf, and the ex used powdered human urine bought from the internet to get hired. So when places like that hire druggies, is it no wonder our nursing homes are in such horrid condition? Scraping the bottom of the barrel, the ex gf called in three times during orientation, and yet..........Rolling Hills is so desperate for nurses in their subpar facility they overlooked this. Anywhere else, FIRED.

Just sayin.

All nursing homes should be shut down. They rip off families and Medicare. They are way understaffed and for the most part they don't exactly hire the cream of the crop.
