Humana is the perfect insurance company if you want to endure a bureaucratic nightmare. They have paid a lot of legitimate bills in the past, but they constantly want to deny skilled nursing facility coverage for my mother, who is recovering from a stroke. Trying to get a straight answer out of the Stepford Wives who work Humana's phone tree (more like a phone brambles) is ridiculous.
Don't believe Humana's omnipresent Medicare Advantage commercials -- they are not your friend. They might save you a bit of money on premiums, but they will take a mental toll if you have to call their "customer disservice" department.
P.S. I'm not a Medicare expert, but I cant truthfully say that *every single person* in the health-care industry that I've talked with while stuck in this Kafkaesque situation says Humana is among the worst insurers to deal with (and usually they groan and say Humana takes the top spot on the evil list). Stay well away if you value your sanity -- and your health in general.

Oh my...where do we start?
Medical: Let's start with the ridiculously high premiums and outrageous deductibles. You better believe that I avoided the doctor's office like the plague. Then add the fact that it took them two months to bill me for the ONE trip I did make...
Dental: "No waiting periods" is a complete lie. I had to wait a month for mine, but it's okay because they just changed the application to reflect that start date. Pretty sure that's illegal, but hey, what do I know? Never used the damn insurance and then tried to cancel it 3 months after they started it. Was told by the foreign customer service rep that it wasn't a problem and my coverage would end at the end of that month. SURPRISE! Still being charged and customer service is useless. "I see that request for cancellation but I cannot do anything about it."
Vision: Yet another scam. Haven't used the coverage, but can't cancel it because SURPRISE! a lovely one year contract.
Bottom line, these guys suck. They'll do everything they can to steal your money and lock you in contracts with some of the worst coverage ever. You're better off going uninsured.

These people are the slimiest slimeballs you will ever meet. If you have a choice in insurance, steer clear of Humana.
I need a genetic test done. I called Humana and they said they will cover 100% of this test. I set up the required pre-authorization rigamarole with my Dr. and Humana.
I get a call from Humana today saying that they won't be covering this test. I ask why. They say they don't like the lab my doctor is using.
This is the only lab in the entire country that does this type of testing.
I would have accepted it if they just told me they didn't want to cover the test. Instead, they decided to dick me around for 2 weeks and eventually tell me I need to get this test done at a lab that doesn't exist.

WARNING! From a provider, STAY AWAY FROM THIS INSURER. They purposely try to confuse members and providers in order not to pay. They refuse to acknowledge your requests and even have AUTOMATED DENIALS in their computer system. That means, even if a claim is completely authorized, legitimate and clean, their computer system automatically rejects the claim simply because they don't intend anyone to follow up on the claim. If you do, and you happen to get someone who is coherent and doesn't hang up on you, they will send you useless information in the mail that isn't related to your request. They will lie to you, they will not call you back, and they will do whatever they can to screw you out of your money.
STAY AWAY FROM HUMANA. I cannot stress this enough.
It was getting too much, Humana, I had to get away from you... Our time was over and I'm out... I'm sure there are many more people out there for you to torture, Humana, but I won't be one of them.
