<quoted text>They have found that dumbing a high school graduate down to the previous fifth grade level was what it took to pass most of the the kids when segregation of the schools was ended in the 60s.
Otherwise there would be way too many left back who had to repeat too many times for the teachers to enjoy extravagant pensions and benefits.
It just cost way to much to get them all smart for the teacher's taste.
That's where it stands right now.
Wealthy teachers and dumb kids.

Despite his racism, there is some truth to what Eighthman said. A lot higher percentage of kids who were slow learners dropped out of school before they finished high school in the past. Now almost all of them graduate and get a diploma, whether they really learn anything past a certain point or not. Today the point of dropping out is at the end of high school and in the first semester or two of college. The kid that once dropped out at the end of 8th or 9th grade now simply graduates from high school and does not go on to college. The ones that in the past dropped out in their junior or senior year of high school now enroll in college and drop out in the first year.

They teach a lot of pointless classes now. Sports history, home economics, weight lifting. Kids need to spend more time in math, science, and English...and not this nonsense.

I disagree. Especially when it comes to home economics and physical education. Home economics is about just what the name says: home economics. Too many of today's kids don't learn the basics of running a household, parenting and child care, etc. at home. If the schools don't teach it, then they will never learn. Physical education - and its companion home economics when it comes to preparing and eating healthy meals - is vital. In case you have not noticed, a great many of today's kids are obese and in terrible physical condition. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, revealed in a speech a few years ago that only 1 in 3 young Americans can pass the physical to get into the U.S. Army. The poor physical condition of our young people is literally a long term threat to our national security.

This may not seem like a big issue since most of us aren't up to anything sinister, but as someone with a degree in mathematics, I can tell you that because the collected information is going to be kept INDEFINITELY, the probability that it will one day be compromised, stolen, and published is just about 100%.
I could take information provided by you over time on FB, and use it to predict what you're going to do or where you're going to be at any given moment in the future.

In an effort to achieve economic and social justice all subjects have been dumbed down so that no one, regardless of how smart he or she is, are not taught any more than the dumbest students can learn. That is what is behind this new Common Core education plan the present administration is pushing off onto our public schools. All students are being held back to the level that those who can't or won't learn. teaching plans are now skewed to the lowest achievers. If you want your kids to succeed you better be teaching them on the side yourself. All our children are now graduating high school with an education that black students got in the old pre integration all black schools. My mother received in 8 years an education equal to what I got in 12. My children have had 4 years of college and hey still haven' been taught as much as m mother got in 8 years. She had 2 years of algebra, biology, real American history, a foreign language, and English grammar that college students aren't taught today

That is not what Common Core is about.

You are ignorant of the facts.Do some research and learn something before you sound off your opinions.

I bet you though that in this age of advanced and computer technology, those kids can operate a computer better than your mom can't they? Kids today my not have all that book ability but they sure can operate a computer better than the older generation.
