That is a product of the "free" education system. If students' parent had to buy the books and pay for them instead of the school furnishing them (paid with money from taxpayers most of who don't have kids in school, and if they do their kids aren't the social class that defaces the books) those parents would insist on their kids taking care of the books. Anything that is furnished free to the lower class gets trashed, be it school books or housing.
You really think it's more efficient for every class of students to buy their own books every year? That's what college is like, and it's a complete racket.
