Aye there Kim, thanks for your reply... I have orientation at GE tomorrow and the next day... April 24th, and 25th, just curious what is it like? Classroom all day? Tour of the plant? Hands on? Anything I should know or you care to share would be helpful, I'm kinda nervous about it all...lol... Thanks...

I finally started on April 2nd which is almost 3 months after my orientation. I was starting to believe that I gad simehow fallen through the cracks.

Overall its not bad but it's not "your fathers GE" that's for damn sure. This new "job creating" contract that was ratified in June of 2011 is less than stellar. The union was going to strike until the company struck a deal if their own first. The offered all current employees a check fir $5,000 to vote yes as opposed to walking out.

The new contract states the following for all new hires after January 2012:
1. No pension plan at all ( everyone else has one and gets to keep it).
2. Substantially increased health care costs which include a $5,000 deductable and no pre-existing conditions ( medical, vision, or dental).
3. Substantially lower wages especially the starting wage. The old starting wage for a level 1 employee was $18.67 p/h. It has been reduced to $13.03.
4. 6 month probationary period for new hires. That means you miss work, late for work even 1 minute, have a family emergency and absolutely have to leave early, late coming back from lunch or a break etc, you're fired. Even though you are in the union from day 1 and union dues are being deducted from your paycheck , the agreed to not represent you during this period.
5. Absolutely no smoking whatsoever. Not on your break outside, not even in your car. You must druve off if the property during lunch to smoke. Since lunch is only 30 mins thats next to impossible. The parking area to your work area is a minimum 10-12 minute brisk walk at best.
6. Your vehicle is subject to security search anytime it is on the property with no reasonable suspicion nessessary.
7. You get 7.5 days if vacation time but 5 days must be taken during plant shutdown, not when you want to take them so your family can take a trip to the beach when you want to. They did this so employees would no longer be able to draw unemployment benefits while the company wasn't operating.
8. No more GE stock for production employees, only for "important " people.

Other than these minor changes its a great place to work. Yes I am happy to have a job so dont go there. I'm simply stating that it's not the GE brand we grew up with.
Profits are at a record level now (I wonder why)

Morale is low ( I wonder why)

Not just a problem for you guys over there. GE Corporate screws ALL its employees with this sort of thing . I'm with GE Aviation UK... they bought us out a few years ago, and its gone downhill ever since then. I'm out next year after 40+ years in the game... I wish you well, you'll probably need it with these paranoid integrity jerks.
Spirit and Letter?... just remember, GE is basically run by Corporate lawyers.

Orientation is all class room for 2 days... Pretty interesting stuff, but unpaid... We got out early both days, around 2:30pm... Some people in my class already had their physical exam, while others hadn't... Also, it isn't uncommon to not have a start date, I still don't have one and I took orientation a week ago...

Thanks for your post T-Dub, very informative... Just curious how the work is once you start? Thanks in advance...

you might call the electric company and tell them your situation with your bill, they may be able to steer you in the right direction.
