Medical marijuana bill named in honor of Gatewood Galbraith
A bill that would make marijuana a schedule II drug, legal for doctors to prescribe, was introduced in the Kentucky State Senate last month. The bill is being titled the Gatewood Galbraith Memorial Medical Marijuana Act.

Several states, including Indiana and Ohio, are currently considering legislation that would decriminalize marijuana for medical purposes. Sixteen states already have such laws in place.

Senate Bill 129, sponsored by Senator Perry B. Clark, D-Louisville, would add Kentucky to that list.

“Marijuana has positive medical benefits for patients dealing with illnesses like cancer, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS, to name a few,” Senator Clark said.“I want to allow this as another treatment option for those individuals.”

The measure would limit patients who are prescribed the drug from possessing more than five ounces per month. They could choose to fill their prescription at a board-certified pharmacy or to grow their own plants. Patients deciding to cultivate plants would be prohibited to no more than five at one time.

The state Board of Pharmacy would be required to create a supplemental-certification program for pharmacies dispensing cannabis, only available to those located in Kentucky. Also under the provisions of the bill, the drug could only be dispensed directly to the person for whom it was prescribed.
Senator Clark represents the 37th Senatorial District, which includes part of Jefferson County.

Prescription drugs kill about 40,000 US citizens per year.

Alcohol kills 80,000

Cigarettes kill 440,000...

Yet marijuana is the illegal one.

Your forgot the most important statistic

Marijuana kills ZERO people a year. There are no verifiable cases of anyone dying from marijuana consumption... ever.

Why not?

I am getting tired of the war on drugs. Cat and mouse game using more resources every year yet the problem is getting bigger.

The big difference from 20+ years ago is the prescription pill abuse. It appears to me the pharmaceutical industry has entered the market with the oxi drugs. It is not longer qualudes, speed and acid.

Pot is not the problem.

i have never understood why it is illega. we can drink and all of us are guilty of drinking and driving. we can smoke cigars, pipes, any tabocco but weed is a big no no? my brother past of cancer. he had it twice, he was well after the first time for over 15yrs. second time it came back hard. he was almmost 6ft and got down to 120lbs. he was given a drip basically so he could die. he lasted one year and died of pancreatic cancer. he said to me the only thing that brought him comfort, allowed some of the pain to subside, to allow him to have a small appetite was weed, which he was prescribed. thank god he lived in cali. i am for legalizing it ....period.

its dope so we call it. but in europe you can go in coffee shops and purchase. many have shown a drop in drug use as well as crime. also, is it really different from tabbacco? cigs have nicotine where as weed does not. aren't they both equally bad when it comes down to it? what about cigars, i have heard they give people a high. what about prozac and xanax that is dope. many are abusing those yet they are legal. or mixing red bull which is not outlawed in many european countries with alchol causing many to have cardiac arrest. it just seems things would be a lot easier if it were legal. i dont smoke period, i think all of that stuff is bad for you lungs. i just dont see the difference between tabacco and weed. you know?

Sometimes I think that this is the most ass backward state in the whole United States! People are so closed-minded here! They would rather see people suffer than be able to use a natural medication. Such bullshit!

I think that this is awesome and I also wish that the people of Kentucky would contact their legislators and show your support! Here is the link:http://www.lrc.ky.gov/who swho
/email.htm
If you know anyone who is sick, aging, or in chronic pain, you really need to look into this! Check out the youtube video-----What is Cannabis Cured Cancer Also check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_cannabis Scientific studies show that cannabis helps with nausea & vomiting (Crohn's Disease & chemotherapy), muscle spasms and tremors (Multiple Sclerosis), wasting syndrome (Aids), depression, pain relief, etc. Patients shouldn't have to resort to buying medication on the black market. And they should have a safer choice that pharmaceuticals. Thank you for listening. Could you also support the Industrial Hemp Legislation. More crops means more working farmers and more jobs for Kentucky!

You think this state will allow it? First of all, the illegal variety is our biggest cash crop. Secondly, we can't get past casino gambling or even build a damn bridge. Sounds like special interest and the underground would prevent this.

If the people of this state could come together for the good of all instead of just worrying about what they want, I think that it could pass, but there are so many people that are uneducated about medical cannabis and just think "It's Dope"...I mean, if they have a computer and are commenting on things, they should be able to do some simple research to find out the facts before they go condemning something that is and could be so helpful to so many. Even if they don't agree with cannabis, there is no reason that anyone should ever be incarcerated for using it. It is so much safer than alcohol or any other recreational drug out there. And it does have medicinal properties. I guess most of the people of Kentucky just support Big Government and the Nanny State. I, myself, don't think that I should have to be babysat from the cradle to the grave. I think that responsible adults should be able to make their own decisions. Especially when it comes to cannabis. Smoking it is a victimless crime. It should be completely legal. The only reason it isn't yet is that the government hasn't found a way to corner the market on it. As soon as they do, see how fast it's legal.

I would rather marijuana be legal than them selling the synthetic version. I have been doing a lot of research on the synthetic and it is 20 times worse than the real thing but yet the sell it in convenience stores and yes there is one I know for a fact here in etown that sales it. I don't smoke pot so I really couldn't give a shit either way. My only point if ur gonna sell the synthetic that is by far worse then u might as well sell the real thing and get rid of the synthetic.
yes i hugely agree.. i do smoke but its hard to find a job if have to drug test so i tried smoking that spice and that is horrible.. i smoked like 4 hits.. baby tokes especially to how much i smoke when i smoke cannabis so i didnt think it would do anything at all.. but i was fucked up outta my mind and hated it.. i dont like to b fucked up where i cant walk and couldnt talk right n laid on the bed and thought i was paralyzed and didnt move for 30 mins+ it was horrible and wanted it to stop the whole time.. i thought i was dying wished i was how bad the high spice gave off... cabbais does nothin like this.. i can function and do anything i can do when after smoked and sometimes i can do things and learn alot easier after i smoked.. and just cuz i smoked dont mean i smoke so much im stoned outta my gills.. u can smoke a small bowl or blunt or joint n get medicated like you need.... but yes spice is terrible.. ppl die from that and not one single person in all of history has EVER died from weed
