-- Questions are being raised in the shooting death of a 16-year-old Louisville girl. Brittany Dunn was shot in the head Monday night by her 21-year-old live-in boyfriend. It happened inside their home in the 400 block of Marret Avenue in Shelby Park. Justin Lewis told police it was an accident, but detectives and her family find his story hard to believe. WAVE 3's Maureen Kyle investigates.
Dunn's family says she and Lewis, 21, argued just hours earlier after another man came to the house. The man was looking for Dunn's cousin, but family members tell us Lewis was convinced the man was looking for Dunn.
Her aunt, Kim Dodson, tells us Lewis never intentionally hurt Dunn before, but she believes last night was a different story.
Dodson lives directly across the street from Brittany and tells us she heard her scream just after 8:30 Monday night.
"I went running upstairs with my 18-year-old son, and she's in the bed. He's got the gun like this, putting it against the wall, screaming 'I'm sorry! I'm sorry Brittany! I didn't mean to!'"
Lewis called police, telling them the shotgun accidentally went off when he was cleaning it, shooting Brittany in the head.
Dodson finds Lewis's explanation hard to believe. "Anyone who owns a gun knows you cannot clean a shotgun with the bullets in it."
Dodson says the cleaning case to the shotgun is untouched, unmoved on the shelf.
Homicide detectives agree the story is suspicious. "Guns have to have someone pulling the trigger," said LMPD Lt. Steve Green. "I've never seen a gun that discharges by itself without a finger on the trigger."
Although Dunn's family says Lewis has never laid a finger on Brittany, they are learning about his criminal record.
Lewis is prohibited from owning a gun after another incident that happened while he was a juvenile.
"We didn't know about the charge," Dodson said. "We didn't know about the charge before, and we found out that he had also shot another girl previously, and she's paralyzed."
Metro police cannot confirm or deny Lewis shot another girl because that is part of his juvenile record. Detectives are handing the case over to the Commonwealth Attorney's office to help determine whether or not this shooting was intentional.
THIS IS NOT HOW HE TOLD ME THE STORY
