If the shelter wouldn't charge so much to adopt an animal maybe more could find a good home. I would rather they be euthanized than sitting in cages cause ppl can't afford them.

then maybe you should consider promoting the idea of responsible ownership, spay/neuter, and pets aren't toys.

the shelters don't breed and neglect these animals. they take them in and attempt to find them homes; otherwise they roam around and become problems for others.

i was in corbin a few weeks back and indirectly met your shelter director. he was transporting 80+ animals up north to a no kill rescue. there is only so much that can be done when careless and irresponsible people won't and don't consider their pets as sentient life forms.

pit bulls are one of the top ten most euthanized dogs in the usa.

pitbulls are also the number one breed for human mauling fatalities in the usa because of irresponsible pet owners.

Sure hope they don't use gas chambers here! Look up "help ban animal has chambers" on Facebook. They is no such thing as "humanely euthanize!" The ones that aren't quite killed off by the gas chamber are sometimes burned alive. That's right folks. Just do a bit of research about the atrocities of this practice. It is sickening.

I wish some people would take care of their dogs and keep them chained or fenced in. I can't hardly walk out of my yard for the fear of someone's dog attacking me.

Looks like they could get an animal league started and also let the community know that they are going to put down this many animals. Also it wouldn't hurt the vets to do a few free spay and neuters then take them to Walmart or somewhere people can see them. They've done it over here before.

If someone can't afford the adoption fee, how can they afford to properly take care of a pet? I spend more money taking my animals in for a routine visit to the vet than any adoption fee. The fee is there for a couple of reasons. I agree I hate to see an animal put down for simply no one wanting them but to adopt them out to anyone under the sun is not a good idea either. I've seen more than a few animals suffer because someone couldn't properly take care of them financially.

Why is it when its dogs or cats we think its better to kill it than let it suffer but when it comes to people its wrong. I see no difference.almost every teenage girl you see in Harlan is pregnant.population is whats hurting this country.something has to be done and I say put a law out that says its illegal to have more than two kids.illegal to have a kid under 18 or not married. Sterilize all that break them laws and enforce them strickly.this planet is dying from over population.I know god said be fruitful and multiply but he didn't mean fu$k anything walking.

We went there one time to adopt a dog. We paid our fees and even signed the paperwork. The dog had just been picked up so they had a 72 hour hold on it to make sure the owner didn't come back to claim it. So 3 days went by no one claimed the dog. We went to pick it up and guess what?.... Our great Judge Executive decided he was going to promise it to someone else and we didn't get it. I would never, ever attempt to adopt another pet from the Harlan County Animal Shelter. I thought that was very dirty and political and will not be back.

i think that all the animals should be free so they could get good homes an not get killed because they have feelings just like we do they feel pain i think that they should all have a chance just like we do.

they probably steal them and try to resale them. I myself am a pitbull lover. Of course people down them because they dont know anything about them except for what they see on the news. Ignorance. They animal shelter is a job on their site they have stuff listed and its not even what it says it is.

Firs off, I'm not the world's biggest fan of our shelter.
That being said, it seems a lot of people have a big misconception about why the adoption fee is so high.

The shelter does not completely choose the price, the vet does. The shelter does need to make a little money because they have animals to feed and care for, but the vet is the one who sets the bar for the medical work. The fee includes vaccinations and altering, and believe it or not, it's a better deal than going to the vet outright. Vets need to make money too, but ours is a money hog, so take it up with him.

Next, I do feel the shelter could do better than they do. I've noticed they've extended their hours, and that's good. More people can get in, but they need to do more for the animals than what they do.
YWAC in Tennessee has adopted out almost 1000 animals in less than 2 months. Why? Because they're out there. They host adoption events, and fundraisers, they're active on facebook and are always recruiting volunteers and donations.
Our shelter needs to get out there more. They need to be active online, such as facebook. There's a lot of people there and it's a good, easy way to stay active and in the public eye. They need to host adoption events and fundrasiers, more than just showing up at the poke sallet once a year for a few hours. Set up a pack walk, have a little contest, take out a few animals to show off, to be adopted, to be ambassadors for the rest in the shelter. Ask for volunteers, do the shelter walk more often. Those dogs need out of those cages more than just once or twice in their stay.
They do not try as hard as they could. That's their problem.

They could have pet contest, sell t-shirts,and ask other animal leagues how to get organized and get donationations. There are hardly any dogs in the shelter over here and the only cats you see are a few at the dump.

Maybe also they could get the local news to feature a pet/pets of the week on a newscast each week. I know our animal league here fosters and puts them online and sends them up north to be adopted. There has been people who even fly in to adopt dogs. I think if they care and want things to be better they'll have to put alot of work in it and ask for help.
