It is sad but the people took a BLOW TORCH to a scene that was HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. Really. They are professionals they knew better. Sorry a tragedy came out of it, but if the workers were educated with common sense, they would know not to mix the two.

What's "sad" is that these were highly trained educated derailment professionals.....they were given the go ahead by a hazmat team that had already processed and documented the site and were told the area was clear. They clearly didn't do their job correctly and put alot of lives in danger. Pray for the families of these men who very easily could have lost their lives and have a very hard road ahead of them....

It is sad. I pray for them. At the same time they put theirselves in that predicament.

Lets see small town evacuated just outside the gates of a major military installation. Reason given: Derailed train car burning chemicals. One picture of firemen using water instead of sand or kitty litter or dirt to put out this fire and three days it is burning...yep sounds like the plot to a ufo movie to me. If you are one of the evacuated you can be darn sure e.t. is going through your panty drawer right now ...using your utensiles and probably eating your cat.

first of all, i don't know how you could say they didn't have common sense, because they were cleared by a hazmat team to go ahead and do the work they needed to, which involved a torch. And yes they are trained and know what there doing, all they did was follow procedures. Instead of saying stupid things, just pray for these guys and there families for the hard road ahead.

HazMat Experts and Firefighters petition Dow Chemical and Union Pacific for safe rail tank cars transporting gas chlorine. Secondary containment is a necessary improvement that must be implemented. See--PETITION C KIT for First Responders Comments.

WARNING: FIRST RESPONDERS’ use of THE CHLORINE INSTITUTE “C” KIT may cause the catastrophic failure of a chlorine tank car, instantly creating a toxic gas plume with a distance of not less than seven miles. The first mile will have chlorine concentrations of 1,000 ppm, causing death after one or two breaths with no opportunity for escape. To learn more, see PETITION C KIT, click on “First Responder Warnings.”
