Mine don't make money either, more of a break even for paying for the electric and the chicken feed. I only sell eggs to those people that can afford to pay and when I have enough money to buy more chicken feed, I give the excess to seniors or donate them to the Senior Citizen Center. What I receive from mine is the exercise in climbing the hill several times a day and to have something that I can consider myself as still being useful and productive.... and they are fun to watch.
I pay around $4 a carton for Eggland's organic, free range, vegetable fed eggs. Sure, wish you lived closer. Does 2.50 a carton for brown eggs seem reasonable to you? I once worked with a Lady who sold eggs. Haven't heard from her in years. You are truly blessed AW: not only in wisdom, but with the inner resolve of accepting life and living it the best you can. No complaining and negative energy. You are a light in this world of darkness. I enjoy your posts. Yes, it is quite important to have that bulb for a bigger flock. My post earlier was for anybody having just a few. My Dad placed a bulb under his old, log cabin years ago to keep the pipes and lines from freezing. Very innovative men, the two of you think alike. I know, he was beekeeping at 14 years old. Young Folks, just don't have the creative energy and fortitude to live hard and make each day count. Not only do you get food and exercise from your chores and those chickens, it is a contented life, meaningful. Not one based on wealth that disappears like our health. Good day to you as always;)

When the kids were living with me , just me, we all slept in the big bed ( they were 5 and 6 at that time). Any way we slept crossways the bed, like crayons in a box, for more room. After the lights were out and we each had picked put our color ( we were crayons in a box, remember) I'd sing to them. And sing. And sing. I pulled every gospel song up from my past and sing all I remembered. Sometimes we'd sing a duet and sometimes we'd sing as a trio. One night while watching a KET music program in which I knew parts of most of the songs my grandson asked if I knew every song in the world. Lol. I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket and I know just bits and parts of songs :-(
There were seven of us who were like lo beside log in the bed. Lol. Here, I thought, growing up that our family was the poorest bunch. We might not have had much; love was in an abundance. Instead of the singing- Dad and Mom performed in churches and he was a minister- Mom told stories that were elaborate and based on the family dogs. Her storytelling was as good as children's books. Strange, huh, how memories unfold and create a glow within us? Happy Holidays to you:)

Lol. My better half would tell the grand kids stories till they fell asleep. Usually pirate or princess stories he made up as he went along. My problem is I'm half asleep and not creative. Singing those songs? Well, the words come automatically from years of use. Lol

I wish I were musically inclined though. Yes I'm aware I could play if I kept plugging away and kept the music in front of me. It is, after all mathematics. but I chop and hack the songs as I lack the flow, the inner feel of it.:-(

I did look at the heated water fountains and thought seriously about them. But didnt go that direction. Perhaps because they were $50 and I already had a sack of scratch and a block of feed in the cart.$$$. Crazy chickens. Lol

@Misty.. The normal price for a dozen brown shelled eggs is $2.50 around here. But those that I sell are $2 since all I am trying to do is to recover my costs and still be able to give some away.

@Miss E.."Blessed Assurance" is my favorite hymn and I find myself unknowingly humming that when I clean the house, especially when mopping the floor. LOL I took piano lessons for many years and all I could play is one Christmas Carole and I can't even do that much anymore due to arthritic fingers.

Technology has me whipped again. After several years without satalite TV I did it again. This time there's an upstairs and a downstairs TV connected. Hoppers, joeys etc. anyway. Somehow, someway while fiddling around with the remotes, my grand kid linked up the TVs and we lost a room. Now both TVs stay on the same channel . The adults are totally lost, so tomorrow I'll have to call the installer guy.

My dear departed Grand-ma-ma use to sit in her rocker and knit, singing an old spiritual song, it went: Oh he is so good to me, he is ...so good to me and then she would look up and see me in the kitchen cabinet stealing cookies, and she would stop in mid hymnal and scream- BOY get you fn ass down from there you'll fall and kill your damn self like that $hit fire and save the matches I'm gonna beat you to death one of these days and then what will everyone think of me? HUh?!? hheheheheee Then she would go back to singing, beautifully. Oh the memories.

I fell asleep early and woke up to see the white stuff (that I don't like) on the ground. I must have been really thirsty and even dreamed about one of those old strawberry cola things that I don't like. and it was full of orange pulp that I don't like either. It must have been a night of dreaming about some of my "dont likes". I guess if the dog had not needed to go out, next on the agenda would be goose liver. LOL

I had planned a trip to see my better half . Hope the weather changes so I can... Btw.. New job. Only 350miles from home instead of 700.
AW: I take it you hate braunschweiger.. About once a year I buy a roll. Love it on ritz crackers or bagels--with a bowl of grapes

@Imposter.. Yes, I am so tight that when I was born, they had to grease me with hog lard for nearly a year before I could get up and walk. LOL I suppose that is why my daddy always called me "slick". But that is okay, I called him "daddy" and he called my brother "booger" which I suppose was just some variation on slick.

I always thought he had gotten some affliction from the war, but later I learned he just had gotten something from his nose that he could not shake off. hehehe

@Anne.. No, I don't care for braunschweiger either. That just seems to me to be a good way to ruin Ritz Crackers or grapes.

I could not spell it either and anything that hard to spell does not belong in my mouth. LOL I will take my grapes and Ritz crackers with some chicken salad that includes chopped nuts. I might even try that in some tuna salad.

@ Miss E & Brown Eyes.....was glad to hear that others are playing music, kinda wish we could all get together like they did in the past with the corn shuck'ns etc. I guess it's just me but in the last 20 years I've come to realize that music will pick you up or it'll also get you down. Now....'course it matters what type of music a body is playing,....Long Tall Sally or "Blues, Despair, Agony on end..........

I think I'm further east than most of you. The cold, windy rain from Texas has been very annoying in these parts, but no snow! Temp's hit the mid 20's at night and only around 42 during the day. So dreary and overcast but it's supposed to be a shiney day Wednesday. So..."This little light of mine, I'm gonna let.........

Oh yeah,...Anne, you mentioned "spell check" on your system. I've got it on e-mail but not on following these forums and wish I did. The Belle and the pro's in town say, nope, can't be done on Comcast or this program. How did you do it?

I'm near Lexington and today is a cold winters day. I'm thinking it's time to dulcimer to Barbara Allen (folk song)

In Scarlet town where I was born
There was a fair maid dwelling
And every youth cried well away
For her name was Barbara Allen

Twas in the merry month of May
The green buds were a swelling
Sweet William on his deathbed lay
For the love of Barbara Allen

He sent a servant unto her
To the place she was dwelling
Saying you must come to his deathbed now
If your name be Barbara Allen

Slowly slowly she got up
Slowly slowly she came nigh him
And the only words to him she said
Young man I think you're dying

As she was walking oer the fields
She heard the death bell knelling
And every stroke it seemed to say
Hardhearted Barbara Allen

Oh mother mother make my bed
Make it long and make it narrow
Sweet William died for me today
I'll die for him tomorrow

They buried her in the old churchyard
They buried him in the choir
And from his grave grew a red red rose
From her grave a green briar

They grew and grew to the steeple top
Till they could grow no higher
And there they twined in a true love's knot
Red rose around green briar
Yep

Ha ha, not mean spirited just honest. Yes, I have eaten filet mignon. If it is not overcooked, the meat is juicy. They are small, but thick cut and best removed while juices flow.Collard greens and a bit of bacon on the side. Yummy. As far as those expensive eggs, well Imposter, I could buy cheaper. It's kinda a like a brothel; they all might look good; some seem a little better. Hehehe. It's raining cats and dogs. Meow.
