This is a true embarassment for Paducah and Western Kentucky. It is not heritage or "Southern Pride". Those who support this flag are hiding behind the term "heritage" because they know that it's wrong to honor a flag that to so many today still stands for bigotry and intolerance and hatred. That's why they are ashamed to come right out and say that they are conservatives who do not approve of black people; or for that matter a lot of modern life and culture today. This is their way of rebelling and making a point that they are still around. But everyone sees through that type of shallow argument. It's really sad and kind of scary that these types of people are still so visible in our society today. But, just look at the conservatives and the Republicans and how backwards many in their ranks are - and it's not all that suprising. Yes, they have the right and freedom to fly that flag and "honor" the Confederacy, or even come out and be up-front racists - it's just really unfortunate that they want to. It makes Paducah look like a hick, redneck pitstop instead of the progressive town that a lot of people are striving to help foster. It is going to take a lot of time and much more education to change this type of ignorant thinking.

Sadly some of what you say is true. I have known some to hide behind the name of the confederacy when bigotry was their reason for doing so. Not everyone who honors the confederacy or looks to it's flag with reverence is a racist however. Just like not every conservative is a Christian or against gay rights, and not every liberal is an atheist or for gun control. When you paint a group with a broad brush or judge someone by the actions of others, then you are practicing the same sort of bigotry that you speak out against. I understand that some people are offended by the sight of the flag, but that should not be the case. Ignorance of the true meaning of a symbol should not make it a despicable sight. Only threw learning facts and not misconceptions can people learn from the past. Bending facts to fit your political and idioligical views is wrong, be you liberal, conservative, democrat, republican, independent, black, white, Jew, asian, or Hispanic. I am totally against slavery, but I agree whole heartedly with the defense of self government, and personal freedom. The same can be said when I look to the US flag. I disagree with the genocide of native Americans, the theft of their land, and the racially motivated imprisonment of Japanese Americans during WWII, but I also love this country and the good things the flag stands for in my eyes.

Civil War was a long time ago. South lost. They wanted to keep slavery. Lots of poor whites died over the policy of 10,000 Southern slave owners. Slavery, the Confederacy, it was good for nobody. Get over it.

And if you care so much, why not secede from the union now, and this time, abolish all forms of slavery, including wage slavery? Instead of continuing and carrying out genocidal policies, why not admit to, and then fix, the mistakes of your ancestor's past?
