The stern warning would have been good enough for the French tourists to realise what they were up to is not acceptable in this part of the world. Dragging them to police and courts and is a bit over the top.

Only if our police and courts were equally quick to give sentences to the monks who destroyed part of the mosque in Dambulla or the monk that stole the Ganesh statue from the Kovil in Panama.

Sri Lanka Government slaughtered 300 000 people and no one have been punished yet, so why arrest, imprisoned and sentenced to 6 month in prison French tourists for silly peck on cheek of the statue ??

Silly peck on the the Buddha statue cheek should not amount to such brutal punishment for the French Tourists.

These foreigners do not hate Buddhism !! They are our guests and they made silly mistake .

Making a mountain out of a small thing, wasting time of courts when courts have very serious jobs to do, inciting words of hatred over a kiss, thinking Buddha Idols can be insulted by ignorant actions, nothing of this sounds anything close to Buddhism taught by Lord Buddha.

Buddha DOES NOT mind any girl kissing one of the idols made for him and if he did he wouldn’t be Buddha!!

I dont think, these French visitors are appreciating that kind of “hospitality”

OMG !! Rajapaksa Government playing skilfully a “Victim ” Card !!! Government spokesman said that the French Tourists would…” would have taken the pictures abroad, published them and gloated at them..?????” He is painting this innocent blunder into the War against Buddhism !!!!!!

BTW why would French Tourists publish their family holiday pics ???

Rajapaksa Regime is making the mountain out the molehill !!!

I think, it is a good way to scare off the tourists and irresponsible way to run the tourist industry.

the tourists should understand that Buddhist statues are sacred to the people of sri lanka. the sentence on the french people was suspended because GOSL was magnanimous towards them and the fine was very small.Anyway what kind of silly behaviour is that to try to kiss a religious statue.
It is not restricted to sri lanka:there would be riots in western countries if non christians were to desecrate christian churches.
In Thailand you go to jail if you insult the King.

Tea Plucker, Stop getting your knickers in a twist & read properly They are not being sent to prison. All they have been given is a paltry $11 fine. I do agree though that taking them to court seems OTT & unnecessary when a simple verbal warning would have sufficed.

Ditto

Although I do agree with PA that they should have known that its disrespectful. Especially in another country when you don't know local customs.

But The Buddha statue is such a big part of mainstream popular art culture that sometimes its easy to forget its a religious idol. We have nightclubs in the UK called Funky Buddha and Buddha lounge.

Some might get upset but they should realise that it makes buddhism a very visible religion. More esoteric religions like Islam and Scientology make them appear suspicous. In contrast everyone recognises the Buddha statues and equates it with peace.

Much to the Tamils dismay

Tamils got upset when the govt offered to build toilets for them in Jaffna library.

They feared that this would violate their age old tradition of shitting in the bushes

Tamils paraded naked and badly mutilated bodies of the Sinhala & Muslims in the Tamil "Holy" kovils - for all to see !!

Do you know what would happen if the British paraded naked bodies of Tamil terrorists in London?

There would be riots for months (remember the London big mac riots?).

People made such a fuss about Abu Grahib, even though the American Defense Minister, Donald Rumsfeld, personally apologized, and many of the soldiers involved were given long prison sentences after a thorough investigation.

No one is punished and the incident is not even acknowledged by the Tamils.

It's a real shame for Tamils !!!!!

A tamil will never understand the need for basic sanitation. what I do find unbelievable however is the fact that they have to defecate in the open. i suppose that it is a substitute for cable TV. Boy scouts learn to make field toilets with a tarp around. i suppose we cannot expect anything more from tamil wretches.

well you must be aware that when thousands of troops converged on to Killinochchi, they found in the centre of the town the badly mutilated bodies of some 12 soldiers who had been wounded and captured in the fighting. the head of one sergeant was severed and placed on a railing. Naturally those Aryans who witnessed such abuses, would not be well disposed towards dravidian wretches.
