Baptists will marry same-sex couples at Iowa City church

An Iowa City Baptist church has become the first in the state to join a national association that advocates for the inclusion of LGBT people, and the church likely is the first of its kind in Iowa to allow same-sex couples to marry.

The Baptist take a lot of abuse but I have to be honest, the best boss I ever had and the most decent, intelligent and compassionate man I ever knew was a Baptist. In fact he helped soften a lot of my radical gay rage Queer Nation thinking.

I used to wear a "Non Breeder" button on my jacket every year during Pride week. Till he told me how much it personally offended him. I threw it down a sewer that night on the way home. I finally saw that it was the gay version of the "n" word and so I don't like that term anymore.

I guess I got off track there but my point is it's nice to see "the good ones" get some good press for a change.

Many Christian Denominations have churches like this one. Why do you think some put such emphasis on "blasphemy" and "heresy"?

I spent years searching for a Christian Church that fit my spirituality. Each denomination has it's good points. But to me they all seem to focus too much on "the fine print" and miss the whole purpose behind the "contract". The Golden Rule.

It's worth noting that this particular congregation has affiliated with the AWAB ("Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists"), a council of churches that is not officially recognized by the American Baptist Church.

Assuredly, they are not associated with the radically fundamentalist Southern Baptist Convention, a large and powerful group that has often ex-communicated entire congregations for failing to meet their rigidly conservative standards.(The SBC requires, among other things, for male staff members to sign a document affirming that their wives are subservient in the home; men who fail to do so lose their positions.)

More forward-thinking Baptist congregations are affiliated instead with the more tolerant General Baptist Convention; it could be that the church in Iowa City is a member of this fellowship.

As I pointed out earlier, Baptists often get a bum rap. And not just from gays.

IMHO the only groups that comes to mind that get as many jokes as Baptists are Jewish Mothers, Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses.
