The ban is against gay men donating. It does not ban HIV+ heterosexuals.

As an HIV+ person I would inform them I had HIV and expect my blood to be used for another person with the same HIV genotype I carry.
That makes HIV- blood more available to save the life of a bigot like you.

Though from your writings I can't imagine anyone wanting your life saved.

The current policy is not based on good current science, but rather on fear and prejudice. Risk screening should be used to separate out anyone who has engaged in high risk behavior rather than focusing on sexual orientation. While the current policy made sense before reliable testing was developed and we could identify the virus, now that we have such testing the current policy makes no sense.

Anyone can carry HIV and pass it on. But having the virus is required for passing it on. People who are not infected cannot pass the virus, no matter what they do. There is no reason to exclude people who are not infected and have not had the opportunity to become infected within a reasonable amount of time. Most can agree a year would be more than sufficient. While the virus can go undetected for a month or more, new policy proposals would require no risk of exposure within a year, which is plenty of time to develop the antibodies which would show up in the repeated testing.

Generalized statistics applied to an entire population cannot be applied to every person in that population. The population at risk is those who have had the risk of contracting the disease within the past year. That includes heterosexual people as well as gay and bi people. There is no need to exclude those who have no risk within the past year and have been tested.

Disease transmission information has always been used to demonize and dehumanize populations targeted for disapproval and punishment. It was used to justify inter-racial segregation, to dehumanize enemies in time of war, and continues to be used today, despite the fact straight folks become infected with all of the same diseases, and even more straight people do all of the same things done by gay people.

The resistance to revising the policy to reflect the current state of science, is based on prejudice, not reality.

In 1997 the group with the highest % increase in new cases were heterosexual senior citizens. Guess they should be banned from donating as well as women of childbearing years, and blacks, right?
