This is getting very suspenseful.

I'm getting the impression that all the suspense is internal to the Tories. It seems like it will come to a vote and pass handily with the help of the opposition parties. The opposition within the Tory Party will wail and howl for a week then move on with life as normal.

Of course, they could take a cue from their American Tea Party cousins and tear the Tory party to pieces. With the range of parties and ideas already available, England wouldn't be missing much. Or they could paper over the differences in the party by withholding the vote. Then the Tory Party remains in tact, but becomes the party of backward social policy.

Tories are still carrying the baggage of Section 28. This is an attempt to put that phase of English conservatism behind them. If they miss this opportunity, the baggage will increasingly weigh them down.

So they have three choices: Obsolesce themselves due to out-dated social policy; Tear themselves apart because of the vote; Or vote their consciences and move on.

"move on with life as normal." Right.. Many wailed and howled over here also; they are now wondering why.. pedophilia continues to be (by a shockingly wide margin) a heterosexual vice, just as before..

The bill passed overwhelmingly. It seems to me I read that it was unlikely to pass the House of Lords last week. Today, I read that the approval in the Commons all-but-assured passage by the Lords.

I'd love to hear from someone who understands the interplay between the two houses and the monarchy.
