Maryland Gay Marriage Could Hinge on Black Churches

Mar 1, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Skanner

With Maryland poised to legalize gay marriage, some conservative opponents and religious leaders are counting on members of their congregations, especially in black churches, to upend the legislation at the polls this fall.

Even a barren husband and wife can give an adopted child something no same sex couple can give; a mother and father.

And many same-sex couples offer what no heterosexual couple will: A loving and caring permanent home. But why should you be concerned about the children that "good" families have discarded as toxic waste? Denying equality to those same-sex couples is much more fun than doing anything to help children-in-need.

How is it that the vast majority of Christendom believes the Bible says exactly what it appears to say with regards to gay sex? My pastor holds a doctorate and can read the original languages of the Bible. Did he miss that one? Is he in on some kind of conspiracy to keep the gay man down? Does he simply hate you? Are they all in on this hate-based conspiracy?
And why is it that virtually the only people that come up with all this stuff are gays and their supporters?
Sorry...I don't buy it. Gay theology is creative interpretation and outright nonsense.
And I don't buy the whole "love is more important" argument. It wreaks of the either/or fallacy. EITHER you are ignoring the Bible and accept the whole "its okay to be gay" deal OR you hate gays and seek to harm them. Right?
I think for myself and my views are more complex and thought out.
As previously documented, many straight people who have devoted their entire lives to study of religion and the bible, have come to the conclusion the few verses commonly used to justify harming gay people and ignoring the Golden Rule have been misinterpreted and mistranslated.

The curriculum is designed to teach about the variations that children will find in this wonderful world we live in. The fact that you want to teach your children to despise that which is wonderful is of no import to us. You will have to do that on your own. Our schools are responsible to teach about the world they live in.
In elementary school, I learned about polygamy, even though there were no legally recognized polygamous marriages in the town I grew up in. We also learned about Judaism, even though there were very few Jews in our school. We learned about Islam, even though there were fewer Muslims than gays in our town. We learned about Hinduism, although there was no community of Hindus.
Somehow, we managed to learn about these alternatives without throwing off the Christian traditions that we were brought up in. And our lives were richer for celebrating various religious holidays throughout the month of December, not just Christmas.
You are the biggest coward I've met on Topix. You are afraid that, exposed to the wider world, you will be unable to teach your values to your children. You have little faith in your values.
Nor should you.
Really Jeff? The curriculum is designed to teach the "wonderful variations" of the world we live in? That's it? Then why kindergarten? That kind of teaching belongs in Social Studies (which I have repeatedly stated that I support). You have to be smarter than that Jeff.

You are either intentionally being dishonest or you are fooling yourself. What is going on here is obvious.

And I have repeatedly stated what I wish to teach my children and why on this matter. When you call me a "coward" and that I teach my children to "despise" you are being dishonest again. Please respond to what I actually post and not your assumptions or stereotypes.

Sigh...and as I have pointed out its not "many" people its a "few" and they are almost exclusively gay activists and those who are sympathetic to their cause.

As I told you I work in this field. Everyday I work alongside people who actually do read the original languages of the Bible. They laugh at the idea you are proposing.

You just believe it because you want to. There is no conspiracy among Christian scholars to keep the gay man down. The Bible really says what it says on this topic.

If you believe that it doesn't matter what the Bible says...then you have a case. That point it debatable. But saying the Bible doesn't actually say what it clearly and repeatedly does is crazy. It makes you look dishonest and irrational. Find another argument.

Oh come on Dave. Teaching kindergartners to have a more favorable view of gays is going to "help them succeed in today's world"? Is that the goal with this instruction?

And I "favor restrictions of what can be taught"...but you don't? No restrictions...huh?

How about Creationism theory? What if they presented the negative stats about gay health?

Everyone is in favor of restricting what can be taught. We just disagree on what those restrictions should be.

Let's try to be a bit more honest here Dave. You agree with what these schools are teaching because you know it will help create a more positive view of gays in the public eye.

Come on Dave. Just admit it.

And yet you continue to send your children to schools that teach them things that you prefer they not learn. So do something about it.

1. Send them to private school.
2. Home-school them.
3. Get yourself elected to the school board to help set policy.
4. Take all school agencies to court to have the policies overturned.

These seem to be the options available to you. Posting on topix will not accomplish any of your goals. The LGBT community learned this and have learned to use all options available to us to achieve our legal goals.

You are free to use your modern English translations to harm others if you choose. Yet it is clear, many straight people as well as gay people, have demonstrated why they believe the few verses used to justify harm have been misunderstood.

For example, does "porneia" mean "a harlot for hire", or does it mean someone who is exclusively attracted to a person of the same sex?

It seems to me that because same-sex couples have started marrying in the great state of Maryland today, this thread has become moot.

Congratulations to all the happy couples.

To those that oppose same-sex marriages... don't enter into one.

To those religions opposed to same-sex marriage... don't perform any.

Happy New Year to all.

I actually have no problem with teaching creationism. The problem is that those wanting it taught want it in a science course. It is not science. It would be okay with it in a comparative religion course.

And yes I believe exposing school children to positive information about the LGBT community is good for the children, the LGBT community, and U.S. and the world at large. The same is true for racial minorities... non-americans... and even those that hold a religious belief (and those that do not).

Unfortunately, the real world that the children live in doesn't wait until it is convenient for you to confront them. In kindergarten, children may encounter other children with two moms or two dads. They may have already encountered gay friends and family members at home.

You think omission is some innocuous, neutral action. It is actually invalidation, and if you are honest, you will admit that is precisely what you advocate.

No...not "many"...just a "few". The vast majority of Christian scholars know exactly what the Bible says about gay sex.

If so "many" scholars believe as you do why has no one created a new "corrected" translation? Perhaps it can be called the "NASP" (New Age Standard Perversion)!

The reason this corrected version has never been produced is that it is mostly the pro-gay, lunatic fringe that discusses such things...like this guy:

Well thank for the offer to send my kids to private school Dave. You are not the first. I think I'll pass. You forgot option 5. Always oppose gay rights in any form and expose the gay agenda whenever possible! You know...it's really pretty easy. It's not like its hidden and its fun to watch you guys get all upset when your curtain is pulled.

Quote of the day:
"The LGBT community...have learned to use all options available to us to achieve our legal goals."

Ain't that the truth! That includes using the public school system to indoctrinate other people's young kids!

So if children in kindergarten run into kids with two moms or dads or gay teachers then let them run into them. They can learn about their community that way. Is it really the goal of this coordinated curriculum to pre-introduce these kids to homosexual families so they don't get caught off-guard? That's ridiculous.

The goal of this curriculum is to systematically train these kids to grow up with a positive view of homosexuals. It starts in kindergarten and each year more and more materials are introduced.

It's the gay agenda in public schools straight up. Just admit it.
