Wouldn't it be nice to see $10,000 in discretionary funds of a Church go toward the support of the needy, hungry, homeless, AIDS treatment and/or prevention? Instead, the Church has decided to put their money toward excluding indivduals who are fighting for equality.

Maybe they should use that money to pay the victime of sexual abuse by Priests in their own diocese.

But then I would never expect the Catholic Church to do the right thing.

So much hypocrisy here. This is "domino theory" nonsense. What does a priest in Missouri care about what happens in Maine? Way to shepherd your people, Rev. You are a shining light of love and understanding.(As long as you're catholic.)

Equality, from your post I suppose you've NEVER heard of catholics and other denominations feeding the hungry, homeless, aids victims or the prevention thereof, not to mention battered women and anyone of need? You should get out more.

This is a shining example of why I left the catholic church. Hypocites. That money could have gone along way to help families struggling in this economy. Instead they used it too promote discrimination against Gays and Lesbians. I was taught Jesus loves everyone, guess I was wrong. The laws to marry should involve EVERYONE. If a certain church decided not to proform the ceramony then thats their decision. Being Gay should not make them less than equal in the eyes of the law. Someday we will look back and wonder how we let that happen, just as we do now with African Americans or Women. Discrimination is Just Wrong!

Why is this news? It would be news it these donations were not made. Christian organizations through their representatives and membership are morally bound to defend their beliefs as they apply to public issues.

I have heard of catholics and other denominations feeding the hungry, homeless, helping aids victims and the prevention thereof, as well as battered women and anyone in need. However, the Church hasn't done nearly enough. Instead, the money was used to exclude individuals from equal rights. Is this the best use of Church resources? Notice, I haven't made this reply personal and have focused on the issue. I hope you will do the same.

Sure we know this happens. Because there are, amazingly, some good people who are members of the catholic church. But the leadership, the leadership, of this church is morally bankrupt. The pope himself speaks out against the use of condoms in Africa. So much for "helping AIDS victims or the prevention thereof." And helping women? What? You mean, treating them as equals to men? HA!

The Catholic Church is not defending the right of marriage. In America, marriage has always been a secular institution even from the days of the Puritans. The Church is defending its self-perceived right to impose dogmatic law upon a society that has an established freedom of religion that prohibits just such a noxious act.

Uhmm, are you Catholic? I mean unless you are, then you have ZERO right to say how they should spend THEIR money. I personally am glad the Bishop did this, I think marriage should be just the opposite of what you said, it SHOULD be a religious union and should have NO secular recognition. Our Government has no place in our bedrooms. However that doesn’t make homosexuality right. I mean people are free to break Gods law all they want, the government should only step in when it inflicts harm on others, they will have to explain their actions to a higher power and there is no need to waste our govt resources on stopping it.

EJD,
Please don't confuse this with Christianity. I consider myself a Christian (and former Catholic) and I do not condone what the Catholic church is doing.

Jesus DOES love everyone, Gay's and alcoholics included, Jesus DOES NOT allow them to practice homosexual actions, or pretend they are married, or drink to excess. Gays just as others born with challenges should resist those urges and try to live a moral life. If a man doesn't desire a woman fine, but he should not take a man either. I will never look back and wonder how we "let this happen" what I will do is if we allow men to marry men and women to marry women THEN I will look back and wonder how we let this happen.

Its so amazing how you (fox 2) does a story on how people give money to stop gay marriage. It would have been nice to see OUR media covering the protesters yesterday at Northwest High School. Good Job FOX 2 your really on top of things!

It is way past time that churches lose their tax exempt status if they decide to disregard the separation of church and state!!!

Please define "moral life", Brian. Is the 50% divorce rate "moral" in the eyes of heterosexual Christians? Is it "moral" for the Church to speak out against the use of condoms in Africa?

Well I wouldn't try to explain all the qualities of a moral life here, but no divorce isn't moral...well divorce is ok, but you can't re-marry that is all. Just because there is immorality in strait people doesn't make that right either? you can't justify bad behavior with worse behavior? As far as “The church” you must mean the Catholic church, because it isn’t all Christian churches that do that, but yes it is ok, they should not be having marital relations with others so there would be no need for condoms if they were not?? That is simple? Follow gods laws and you will be fine, it’s that easy.
