It is unfortunate that change takes time. As I've stated in other threads...it starts with one. The idea that civil rights are achieved overnight, while a great fantasy, is just that...a fantasy. Think of the distance between the sit-ins at Woolworths and the achievement of equality between whites and blacks.

Where abouts is Bedford? I have heard of it but have no idea where it is.

I have come to believe that Austin is an oasis in Texas and the rest is primarily narrow-minded bigots. It is nice to know that there are other places in this state that are decent.

Honey, I KNOW something about the south, having spent the first 40 years of my life trapped there. And those "stereotypes" are indeed accurate. The south is THE most racist, sexist, and homophobic place I've ever seen. People are kind to you IF they think you are just like them; however, if you are from a different race, religion, or sexual orientation, then watch out! The "morality" is fire-and-brimstone drivel straight out of the Dark Ages.
Now, there ARE progressive, well-educated people in the south, but they are so out-numbered by the rednecks and Neanderthals, that I fear for their sanity as well as their survival.
The happiest day of my life was when I was finally able to escape from the hell-hole of the south.
<quoted text>
I hate that you had a negative experience in the South. But as I said before, your experience does not encircle all Southerners. I STILL live here and I've had many gay friends as well as many black, Asian, Spanish friends, etc. I can probably count on two hands the number of people I've met in my entire life that fit your description. I believe that no one should be judged because of their race, sexual orientation or whatever else may be in question. I honestly can not think of ONE of my acquaintances that fit what you say a Southerner is. For any who hate the South and who don't like the way life is down here, there's one simple remedy: leave. Having been to Chicago before, I was discriminated against and unfairly judged because I was from the South. How is that any different? And I'm not accusing all people up north of hating Southerners. I realize that was a few people who were clearly judgmental. But instead of being treated unfairly, you know what I did? I left! Problem solved!

Where is my white robe when I need it? If you are going to accuse me, a god-fearing southerner, of being an illiterate racist and a homophobe, I might as well play the part. I do have many conflicting views that may seem to reflect my backwoods upbringing, but "can't we all just get along?" Keep your gayness to yourself because you have made the answer of the question a resounding "no." All you progressive individuals that glorify yourselves by being so accepting of our social "regress," BITE ME. That't your greeting from the South. Homosexuality dooms the human race to extinction, but at least those so-called southern imbreds realize it takes a male and a female to procreate. My motto holds true: God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

Sorry, but I think you are deluding yourself if you think that your attitude reflects that of the majority of southerners. In my home state, the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage passed with 80% of the vote! Now try to tell me that the south is not homophobic!

And I'm not talking about "visiting" the south, but enduring it for 40 years! And yes, I, too, had a handful of progressive friends. But the overwhelming majority of people I encountered were racists, sexists, and/or homophobes.

While I was visiting recently during the winter holiday season, I had to take my car in for a simple repair. The ONLY materials in the waiting room of the major car dealership waiting room were the bible, a guidepost (a fundie christian rag), and field and stream -- because of course EVERYONE is a god-fearin' hunter in the south! I laughed so hard when I saw those publications, because I knew that despite the protestations of people like you, the south is just as backward as it always has been.

And I did leave -- ten years ago. Have never regretted it once. I actually feel my blood pressure and stress level rising when I arrive back for a visit.

My advice to all the GLBT people who are currently trapped in the south is the same as yours: GET OUT! There are many wonderful places with many progressive, educated people. Rednecks rule only the deep south!

And thank you for proving my point that the south is full of narrow-minded bigots!

And we can't "all get along" because PEOPLE LIKE YOU are trying to pass laws to prevent GLBT equality. But guess what: we aren't going to ride in the back of the bus anymore. So you and your ilk are just going to have get over your foolish prejudices and hatred.

Oh please! The whole Adam and Eve "motto" is such a cliche! Can't you people come with something that is clever?(But then if you were clever, you wouldn't be a homophobe, so I guess I already know the answer to that one.)

Here's my greeting to you: you can take your motto and SHOVE IT!

All I have to say about this article is: no sh*t, sherlock! We in the gay community are very aware how bigoted the south is towards us and other minorities and how they use their religious bigotry to condone hatred and perpetrate discrimination. The majority of the south also votes Republican and will continue to do so which is why our ecomony sucks right and people are dying over in the war in Iraq. Many of the southerners are so racist and bigoted that they will not even consider voting for Obama just because he's half-black. They just prove how ignorant they are by acting like this. I would never live in Alabama, they are so anti-gay and anti-sex. They have a ban on the sell of all sex toys and all pornography. You can't even order porn online and have it sent to your house. These companies are banned from mailing it the state and all its zip codes. Talk about invasion of privacy. What happened to freedom of expression. Let's boycott Alabama! Alabama sucks you know what. All I have to say is gay people breathe the same air straight people do and straights bleed the same way gay people do. We're are all human whether that portion of the straight community wants to accept it or not.

Extinction? LOL! Yeah, that's a real concern, given that over-population is already straining our planet's natural resources. If one were logical (it's hard for you, I know, but try), one could argue that something that kept the birth rate down would be beneficial to humanity.

Besides, you apparently don't realize that many GLBT people DO reproduce. There is currently quite the baby boom within the GLBT community. Granted, some of these families have been created through adoption (you know, taking care of children you straights have cast aside), but many include biological offspring through artificial insemination and surrogacy (the same techniques used by some opposite-sex couples). There have been a number of news and feature stories about the increase in gay parenting lately. Try educating yourself before you shoot off your mouth.

You just proved my point. Everything is artifical. You still need the very basics of God's creation. Fags or dykes still can't do what the good ole' southern hetero can accomplish in a pile of hay or in the back of a pickup. Boycott Alabama. I wish you would. Save your confedarate money. For all of you who are stereotyping all Southerners as bigots, racists, and non-Christians...why do you think you're any better? Here you are grouping together an entire quarter of the nation when most of you have probably never even been to the South! Yes, there are some people who fit your 'southern profile' but majority of people in the south are as one person said, live and let live. I could care less if anyone is white, black, purple, gay, straight, hermaphrodite or anything else! I love the South because people are kind. People love their country. People have a little morality left. I'm not saying those things don't exist in other parts of the country, but that's why I CHOOSE to live in the South.
I agree that there are a few nice people in the south like you. But I wonder sometimes if southern hospitality is only extended to those they agree with. I wore an Obama shirt and Obama button with a rainbow on it one day and people tried to cause me all kinds of problems. I got treated differently that whole day. They checked my bags and receipt going out the door when I had done nothing wrong. They check my receipt for the popcorn I bought and asked for a receipt for right in front of the security guard who checked me. He even check the receipt for my prescriptions which you have to pay for at the pharmacy. They messed up on my prescriptions and tried the best they could charge me the full price when I finally argued with them enough and convinced them that didn't have my insurance currently in their system. When I prepaid for gas I pre-paid $60 and put in $21.65 to top off my tank. They charged me 45 something and argued with me that that was just the way it was. I stood there and demanded my money and she went an checked the pump to see that I was telling the truth. All of these things happened on the same day. The south discriminates against political affiliation and support someone of another race too. I thought to myself that southern hospitality was a bunch of B.S. My advice to everyone is to get a receipt (always) when you pre-pay and then get a receipt for your change. Take extra care when wearing a shirt supporting a black man or Democrat. I'm proud to be a liberla and a Democrat and an Obama fan and have no shame or fear whatsover. Most of the south is Republican. The Republican Party has ruined our economy and lives.

I don't know...I can accomplish quite a lot in pile of hay. What are we talking about here?

As for your "south shall rise again," tid-bit...where is it going to go?

Don't you think it funny that our savior Democrat Billary Clinton made us a laughing stock by whippin out his pecker in front of the world? "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." Even children picked up on that idiocy. The Democratic party at that time was responsible for the largest percentage rise in immorale sexual conduct amoung children ever seen in history.

I have friends in Houston and spent some time there last year and I thought it wasn't that bad. Now since I don't live there, it may be a different story

Sure they can. They're called 'closet cases'. They get married and produce small minded, hateful, bigoted demon-children such as yourself.

Homosexuality dooms the human race to extinction? How is that? Especially considering that homosexuality has exsisted in roughly the same percentages since history has been recorded. The only way that homosexuality could doom the human race is if Nature decided that she didn't like humans anymore and from that point on caused every birth to be a homosexual.
As far as keeping it to ourselves - When you keep your bible to yourself and we have ALL of the rights that are due us as American Citizens, then maybe we will fade into the complicated tapestry that is American life, muting our fuschias and cerises, but how dull would American life be without those pretty colors?

Oh that's right, you're from the South and don't like color either.

2.) I'm bisexual so I guess I'll just take them both at the same time

Yes...that's the root of America's problems, Bill Clinton's manroll. Why didn't I think of this sooner.
