There's at least one person on this SJH list who at some point in time stopped caring about childrens educations and became a non-teacher "going through the motions" of maintaining discipline in the classroom.

As per usual you would be hopelessly incorrect in your assertions. People were begging Mr. Harves to show them the books so they could put the Budget and Finance Committee in its rightful place.
Remember the Budget and Finance Committee began asking for these records in January 2012, as part of their look into the pay to participate program and athletic financing.
Month after month the requests for financials went out from the Budget and Finance Committee to the booster board, each time came the reply they were working on getting them together.
It would be another 6 months before the boosters would finally get a look at Mr. Harves' accounting program.
By then (IMHO) well more than a million bucks had fled the coop under the watchful eyes of the booster board.
Let's face it, if the guy has the cojones to write checks to himself for $439,000 for seven years (that is as long as bank records are required to be held and thus as far back as the investigation could go)
do you really believe he had any moral uncertainty about reaching into a bag full of uncounted cash?
This man ran the finances for 20 years, how much do you think he shortchanged our kids?
And who made up the difference between what was needed and what was diverted?
The answer to that is simple, parents of the student athletes who did the work and donated the money.
So what happened to the $439,000? Has this been paid back?
Now that we have a new athletic director, should parents not demand that the athletic director give regular budget reports of the booster board business at the public school board meetings?
Could we not find out where the money is from the director of the school sports program? School will be starting soon, and where
are classroom and sports fees posted? Many parents are asking about parking fees for the new year.
So many important concerns for our students; but all we hear from parents in the boardroom are demands to give teachers pay increases.

That union contract increasing teachers pay has November renewal FAILURE rubber-stamped all over it for S-U-R-E.

Why would any Springboro parent, other than pro-union lovers of tax and spend, vote yes to spend $9.2 million/yr for the next five years, yielding nothing in return, except less work for union teachers with more money for doing nothing?

Parents who speak out during board meetings represent the minority. Although many names and titles have changed since the especially manipulative Baker-Dettwiler era, the fact remains Springboro schools administration and teachers are decidedly bias against conservatives. Conservative parents who publicly speak out against Springboro teachers realize there's a very real risk any one of their child's teachers or coaches may use children as scapegoats for frustration they may have toward their parents. Yes, Springboro schools has teachers and coaches who are in fact this immature.)

So rather than risk retaliation in such a way, common sense parents in our district tend not to attend board meetings. As evidenced by the result of the past few school levies, common sense parents of this district generally prefer to let their BALLOTS do most, if not all, of the talking.

Doug,

If our schools are such a failure and our teachers greedy, lazy union thugs who are doing a poor job of educating our students, why do you still send your children to school in the district? If I thought the way you did I would pull my children out of this district in a heartbeat so they could get a successful education elsewhere and be well-prepared for college. I certainly wouldn't leave them in a failing school district. That is, if I really believed all the venom spewing from your mouth.

This education system has held up false gods and forced children to praise them.
Maybe this should be the new Controversial Topic. Praising false gods is a sin.
Students were also forced to write letters of appreciation to district employees for appreciation day.
Indoctrination exists inside our schools.
Inside our statewide Ohio schools exist a cult-like false religion
of unionism, with union gods of education, like Ron Malone, evangelizing to convert Springboro boys and girls HOW to think,
based on the doctrine of the Ohio Education Association fighting social justice for union teachers. The OEA is all about fundraising! Recently we have seen this "fundraising" Maney/Malone campaign for highly paid educators to be paid more; the more pay the union teachers can squeeze out of the taxpayers, the more dollars in union dues comes back to the SEA,OEA,NEA, and the liberal socialistic political party of government.
Our Springboro Education Association members are just mindless puppets in the hands of the big labor union bosses; as they take from the hands of the local teachers union their "fair" share of what the SEA "unfairly" takes from local taxpayers.
Now we have a team of former Springboro schools educators, Malone/Stuckey, roaming their "mission field" of Springboro voters, fundraising for the SEA, promising all kinds of goodies to Springboro parents in exchange for being crowned "chief bully" of the Board of Education in November at the polls.
Stay Alert, Voters! The Malone/Stuckey evangelistic team is preaching false doctrine of the pro-union lovers of tax and spend! Malone/Stuckey are strangers to real life responsible spending and are only trying to suck you into that dark tunnel vision of the narrow "donut" hole, keeping our kids future left behind in the dark ages of unionism false teaching. It is a terrible thing for a child's mind to be wasted by OEA indoctrination.

Boro Backer, It only makes Sense that our Springboro parents,(whose eyes have been opened to the "union scam" of their selling out our children's future) to care enough, about all children's best interest, to stay engaged in this failed education system, and continue working for improvements from within the system. It's a work in progress, for which some believe our children's education is worth "doing the negotiation dance" (even when the "union scams" keep stomping on our responsible spending toes).

That would not help all of the other children mired in a system that you describe. I have never described our teachers as you have so derisively. I have criticized, and will continue to criticize, a system that forgoes its primary mission in place of semantic achievement.

To pretend that PROFICIENT means anything less than FAILURE is to practice a degree of intellectual dishonesty I am not prepared to embrace.

If the 32% scored on the math achievement assessment test is good enough for the state, why are we worried about a brain drain of teachers in Springboro? Do you really need to be that talented to get your students up to answering 1 question out of 3 correctly?

I have not seen many schools lining up to recruit those levels of educational attainment for college.

We can, and must, do better for ALL the children, not just mine, but ALL the children.

And that, my friend, is who I am fighting for on this blog.

Here's a basic logic education especially for you, Boro Backer:

In this district there are a select number with the foresight to seek the truth, to seek what's TRULY best for our children & community. Then there are others who choose to follow popular voices that have led us to misery. Boro Backer please don't become just another follower. Springboro schoolchildren deserve so much more than to have lemmings as their parents.

Boro Backer, I think you're over analyzing Doug's posts. The way I read them, the schools aren't necessarily failures but they aren't doing nearly as well as they could or should be. I agree based on the stats he posts.

Regarding the teachers being greedy... The union heads control the contract deals... The teachers union benefits exceed those that we receive in the private sector. So who's the greedy one?

Being lazy, surely not all but some. I could name a 1/2 dozen or so, based on comments and opinions from my own children and friends of theirs.

I know a 7th grade math teacher in particular, who constantly sent my kids classroom to Penda and Study Island to do math homework. This is an epic 'fail' in my opinion. It's no wonder Match scores are so low.

Isn't that what the board is pushing - technology in the classroom? Maybe you should complain to them.

Oh yeah ... complain to the board? you betcha .... just as soon as we get our great education gods, Malone and Stucky, on the "other side of the table"... you betcha! Let the complaints to the board begin! Finally when we get Malone and Stuckey in the board room hot seat, we will learn the truth about just "which one is lying." If we can get the pro-union lovers of tax and spend
"herded" into the BOE "interrogation" room, then we finally turn up the heat and really "burn out" that old has been a high school principal, Ron Malone.

Right. All those teachers, with all those MASTERS degrees ought to know better, yet, rely on 'technology' to do the heavy lifting.

I don't hear any complaints from the brains of the SEA. Don't they know what's best for our children??

Has anyone on this blog actually read the negotiations updates on the Springboro schools website? All of the SEA demands are focused on giving the union more power and control of everything over the superintendent and the board members; there are so many rules and regulations that are so petty! You will notice that pages and pages of these boring demands never mention one benefit to our students; just rules and more rules for the building principals and school administrators to be folded into the union agenda of more power and control for themselves. Parents really need to get into this and better understand exactly what we are buying into with the proposed renewal levy. If parents are not getting improved service from the union teachers, and the union teachers are shutting parents out of their union business with the terms of this new contract, then why should we parents vote to renewal levy of big bucks for nothing in return?

Maybe you should inform yourself of the State Department of Education laws that are pushing technology in the classroom. Our children first board members are merely doing what's right for our children's 21st century education; but obviously our collective bargaining laws of our State giving teachers the legal right to walk out on our children's classroom education are the only state laws the SEA/union activists are "pushing." Too bad none of the teachers will stand up for kids. But that's just the kind of union teacher in every classroom is mandated by law for S-U-R-E.

Are you insane, technology is a tool for the skilled craftsman to utilize. CAD stands for Computer Aided Design, the key word is aided. The machine still needs to be set to run by what we call a human.
Just logging out of a class and dialing it in is not using technology as a tool, but instead as a way to get out of doing your job.

Just Watching wrote:
Reading my morning copy of the Dayton Daily I note that Mr. Budd missed the point of the policy proposal being discussed regarding controversial issues.
Little did anyone know that the policy dealing with controversial issues that arise in the classroom would itself be controversial.
The main crux of the policy is to require teachers to present both sides of an issue to the students when they arise in the course of normal classroom activities.
The policy in NO way, shape, or form advocates the teaching of creationism any more than it promotes abortion. It simply requires teachers to not advocate one side over the other, but to present both sides of an issue to the children
The list of topics the board feels would benefit from a free and open discourse of ideas from both sides of an issue include:
sex education
legalization of drugs
evolution/creationism
pro-life/abortion
contraception/abstinence
conservatism/liberalism
politics
gun rights
global warming
global cooling
climate change
sustainable development
Who but the union and its supporters would have a problem with both sides of an issue being presented for debate and discussion?
As anyone who has lived a longer life, their are seldom issues that present themselves in strictly black and white terms. Life is filled with the grey area which makes it interesting. Teaching our children to begin the process of analyzing and interpreting various points and counterpoints in presentations will make them more confident in their ability to understand life in general.
ONe final side note is the fact Mr. Budd failed to mention the most salient point of the night. The notice given by the Budget and Finance Committee that it would support a renewal levy in November seems to have been lost in the psuedo issue described above.
Too bad, because that was really the big news of the night.
Too bad for the Springboro Education Association that their negotiating tactics played out so negatively in front of the TV news cameras. Their bad behavior expressing such greed, with absolutely no thanks nor gratitude for the good wages and benefits that they already possess, certainly gives pause to one's response on whether or not to "pay up" at the polls with this renewal levy vote in November. Why in the world would Springboro citizens for responsbile spending even consider rewarding the Springboro Education Association for such inappropriate behavior? Our school children deserve better role models. Our community has already paid enough and what have we received in return? Why should taxpayers reward such poor performance of educators with more money? They will only come back for more in two years, with the same old emotionally blackmail with the same old threats of striking against Springboro homeowners for more money.
There is no end to the union bridge leading nowhere; just an endless waste of taxpayers dollars.
