Oh, please! Stop the whining about class sizes! The average European and Asian class size ranges between 32-38 students. It's extremely well documented that K-12 education in many of those nations is at least equal to, or has exceeded America's.

I doubt if many of the students labeled as Proficient for 12 years in the Springboro school district will be taking any of your professional exams any time soon.
And that, dear friend, is the crux of the situation.
Which of the 2000 plus students that we so cavalierly dismiss could have been making a greater contribution to society and themselves had we done our job and educated them in a better fashion?
Who are we dismissing today that could have turned into something had we done the job we were supposed to do rather than hiding behind semantics, accepting less than mediocre as success?

What classes are being cut?
From my understanding more kids are opting out of the PE requirement because of participation in Marching Band and Sports programs. And I believe this was a Ohio Department of Education initiative, not the Springboro BOE.
Have you considered the PSEO option of gaining college credits while taking more challenging courses at the university level? It is FREE for the student, as the district picks up the tab if your child passes the course.
All said PE is still a vital part of the strong mind, strong body ethos that can carry a child a long way into the future.
I would not recommend you denigrating our PE program when you have so many other options for pursuing whatever classes your child wishes to study.

I am sure of the veracity of your statement, I just like to check them out for myself.
I don't believe anyone cut all the electives at the high school.
Again, where could we get the documentation on this claim?

It is hard to believe that the BOE is now supporting PE over academic courses. If you were really just watching you would know that the BOE added Team Sports and Individual Sports and dropped several academic courses.

This is the best the union can deliver when 37% of your children are effectively not getting the education for which the taxpayers have paid?
That means that 63% of the children are successful, some way more than others, but 63% remains the level at which our schools are performing in their job of educating our children.
Mr. Malone defines grades earned while taking college level courses at a university through PSEO as:
63% passing rate would indicate our school system deserves a D according to Mr. Malone.
D is a far cry from Excellent with Distinction.

Teachers Union Targets Springboro School Board with Labor Complaint
The Springboro Education Association (SEA) accused the Springboro Community City Board of Education of unfair labor practices because the board issued a January 10 press release calling for contract negotiations, the Dayton Daily News reported on February 5. SEA, a local of the Ohio Education Association, filed a complaint with the State Employment Relations Board (SERB) on January 28, charging that the board’s release violated the union’s right to private negotiations.

In its SERB complaint, SEA alleged that the Warren County school board violated sections 4117.11(A)(1), 4117.11(A)(5), and 4117.21 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC)“when it issued a press release setting forth its negotiation proposals and goals” and distributed the release to district staff.
ORC 4117.11(A)(1) prevents government officials from interfering with public employees’ selection of union representation. ORC 4117.11(A)(5) forces government officials to bargain with their employees’ selected union. ORC 4117.21 requires collective bargaining meetings to be held in private.
It is difficult to see how a school board press release calling for SEA to negotiate and listing the district’s goals violates any of the provisions of state law cited by the teachers union.
SEA and the district are currently operating under a 2006 labor agreement that has been repeatedly extended. The most recent extension expires this June, but the school board seeks to renegotiate by early May so it can plan a November levy request accordingly. As The Cincinnati Enquirer reported, the board’s January 10 letter was a call to begin negotiations on a financially unsustainable contract.
While the board asserted that “completing negotiations will relieve employee anxiety over negotiations and instill confidence throughout the Springboro community as the Board seeks to renew a $9.2 million tax levy in 2013,” SEA rejected the call to begin negotiations early.
“The Board’s current financial forecast presents a balanced budget but assumes no overall increase in payroll and no overall increase in medical insurance costs for the next five years,” the Springboro school board wrote in its release before warning,“Reverting to the terms of the 2006 contract will invalidate these assumptions and cost the District an additional $5.7 million for payroll and $5.6 million in insurance over the next five years.”
Unlike many districts in Ohio, Springboro Community City Schools spending has been relatively flat and is expected to remain so over the next five years. Assuming the district and SEA are able to come to terms on a new contract, personnel and fringe benefits costs are expected to decline by 0.91 percent over the next four years.
Even with a small decrease in benefits and pay, compensation would remain a large majority of the district’s total spending. In 2013, teacher salaries and benefits accounted for 76.99 percent of the Springboro school district, a figure projected to swell to 78.23 percent of the budget in 2017.
Absent a new agreement with SEA, the Springboro school district’s compensation costs will increase by a total of $11.3 million over the next five years, or $2.26 million annually. This would represent a 6.7 percent increase in expenditures.
During contentious contract negotiations in Brecksville in 2012, the local Ohio Education Association affiliate filed legal complaints similar to those being made by SEA.

According to the above synopsis if the teachers refuse to negotiate their pay and benefits go up $11,300,000.
The renewal levy is for $9,200,000 to keep things where they are right now.
How many of you think we are going to pass a renewal levy AND a new money levy that is nearly 20% higher than the renewal levy they are worried about?
My money is on maybe the renewal levy passes if they haven't perturbed too many voters with the union's demands.
The new money levy for an additional $11,300,000 plus, no chance.
So who pays the price for this latest bit of idiocracy?
Aside from the obvious answer the children, I would like to offer up any teacher not teaching a core subject, any teacher not involved with special education, any teacher lacking any degree of seniority, administrative staff with no seniority, support staff, etc. etc, etc. It will take quite a few bodies to make up $11,300,000 in cuts to get to a balanced budget.
Those in the union with sufficient seniority do not need to fret much for they are protected. The junior members on the other hand will see themselves tossed overboard to save the senior members.
Seriously, why negotiate, as long as you are a senior member of the union there is no downside to intransigence.
The senior members won't be the one's paying the price.
And pray that the community never discovers that over 2000 plus of our children are not getting the education the taxpayers are funding. That just might really upset the apple cart.
