"'We believe the definition of 'marriage' to be the union of one man to one woman,' the petition, sponsored by right-wing activist Ralph Reed's Faith & Freedom Coalition, reads.'Pro-family and Pro-freedom Americans cannot sit idly by.'

"Representatives for the National Cathedral remain undeterred by the petition's threat.'We have absolutely no intentions of changing course [on gay marriage],' Richard Weinberg, the Cathedral's director of communications, told The Huffington Post.'For us, it's a theological issue ..."

... then where's the theology that supports same-sex marriage?

So the right wingers are the ones calling for defunding the church, because the church performes same sex marriages.

Hello - freedom of religion, anyone?

They also allege the public is subsidizing gay marriage ceremonies by funding the church. How does that work? Churches take money from the couple when they perform ceremonies.

This church is exercising their rights and they don't have to answer to anyone.

The churches that should be defunded are the Mormon and other churches that go far out of their way to participate in elections about gay marriage, even going as far as sending in people from other states to go door-to-door, etc. Those churches should be defunded, not this one.

There are already plenty of churches that perform same sex weddings. This is not new.

The boycott is really meaningless. No one but a waffling mainline "protestant" would support the cathedral in any event.

How can ANY federal tax money go to supporing a particular denomination's church or cathedral ?!

1. I don't believe that it receives andy federal money at all.

2. If it IS receiving so much as a single cent of federal money, it's blatantly unconstitutional.

Cupcake, if that is the garbage you want to stand before God with, that is between you and him. You can rationalize your ugly bigotry and irrational hate all you want, but you really should quit blaming God for you unfortunate choices. Oh my! Please provide a list of states where straight folks are now being forced to marry someone of the same gender!

I've NEVER heard of such a "re-definition".

Oh.....

Are you trying to say that straight folks are so weak and insecure that the very notion that somewhere a gay person is legally marrying will cause their own marriages to be "re-defined" and devalued in some obscure way?

I don't see that happening. I personally don't know any straight folks with that sort of weakened and damaged mind.

Yes, and He made gay men and lesbian women.

And it was good.

In the fullness of time he has sent them love, soul mate, and families, and has blessed the creations that he has chosen to give only the ability to be attracted to the same gender.

Trying to twist scripture to fit your own biases is never a good idea.

If you believe that God created men and women in his own image, than one part of his image is gay, because some folks are just created that way.

If you apply the same sorts of reasoning and logic to the lives of gay folks that you apply to yourself, you should fall out of error.

I.E - if it's a blessing for YOU, then a good marriage and a strong family are also a blessing for gay folks.

It's not that hard to understand.

No, I'm REALLY saying that 'the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' doesn't give one the right to redefine the English language.

Sure it does ! People change the meanings of words all the time. That's why language "evolves".

Not all English words used today mean the same thing they did in the time of King Henry VII, nor even in the time 100 years ago.

You mean like this definition from Merriam Webster on-line dictionary?

a (1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2): the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage <same-sex marriage>

... "like" doesn't denote identity just as Bishop Gene Robinson referring to himself as the "wife" of his male partner -- at least when they both lived together in NH -- doesn't denote that he's a woman, no matter how effeminate he acts.
