A much larger group of people ... including greater numbers of moms and dads, authors and activists, former and current police officers and former and current single parents ... say "Yes."

Like the shrinking minority who say "No", they are black and white and Hispanic. Their number includes archbishops, bishops, priests, evangelical ministers, rabbis, cantors, preachers, teachers, deacons, and elders. Many have large families - including gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual queer and questioning members.

Their explanation is simple ... same sex marriage is a constitutionally guaranteed equal right.

The end.

None of these people have any facts to backup their stance, only feelings and beliefs.

Right ! This opposition is based on hot religious air , with no valid arguments .. It's " it was always so " and " the Bible says " taking no account of the terrible things that were once " always so " and supported by the Bible .. They're just trying to disguise their prejudices behind soft , hypocritical words ..

I agree. Any arguments pro or con on establishing equal marriage rights for all Americans, should be based on logic and reason, not on "feelings" and beliefs.

As almost everyone here knows, my "feelings" are that i HATE Democrats and liberals, and BELIEVE they are Evil (PURE EVIL), but I cannot support any argument prohibiting their right to marry.(Unless I want to extend that argument to "SAVE THE CHILDREN !) from Democrats and liberals.)

You hate some people for their harmless choices, that makes you a bigot. You are exactly what you are decrying here. That's not a very solid stance.

"harmless choices" ???!!! Your liberal insanity is showing !

The Dems and libs, and their assorted cohorts and minions, want to establish SOCIALISM in the U.S., thereby EXTERMINATING LIBERTY & FREEDOM, and they have been SUCCESSFUL under teh radical Stalinist Obamaniac regime, by imposing OBAMACARE on all Americans. And they will NOT stop there ! Why do you think they BOUGHT the Soviet Union's Communist Party, after their spectacular collapse in 1991 ?!

They are Evil. PURE EVIL.

Yeah, you know what, your entire post here fails from the beginning, I am not a liberal. Personally I don't like most liberal ideals, many of them are ill-conceived and brash. But they are not socialists, by far, the two are about 90 degrees from each other. But modern conservatives are too deluded, they have this god delusion, that their imaginary friend is in charge of the universe, and will not hesitate to blame all their decisions on that imaginary friend, worse, their supporters accept that and leave their politicians blameless. I'd wager you think that Republicans and Democrats are actually different too, and that one is all liberal and the other all conservative as well.

The thing is, corporations do run this country, and they have for a very long time, and it's not such a bad thing. If anything, the corporations are more responsible for the social program funding than anyone else, see, mandated profits are certain profits. The problem is that people as ignorant as you are continually voting for the same corporations, thus, we now have a slight imbalance. But meh, since no one wants to get rid of the regulations that make corporations possible we just have to learn to vote better, that's all. My vote is to get rid of the regulations that make corporations legal and restore the balance of supply and demand, which will offer more choices and far fewer mandates.

From the article:

"What ties this diverse group together is a belief that legalizing more same-sex marriages will harm the family, particularly children, while encouraging homosexuality and infringing on educational and religious liberty."

Where's the evidence to support their "beliefs"?

These are as much faith claims as are their unsupported and conveniently unsupportable god claims.

Where's the evidence that civil marriage for same-sex couples will harm the family or children?

Where's the evidence that civil marriage for same-sex couples will "encourage" homosexuality, as if more people will "turn" gay?

Where's the evidence that civil marriage for same-sex couples will infringe on educational and religious liberty? What liberty? The liberty to insist that beliefs based on superstition and myth be taught in schools?

There remains no rational basis for denying civil marriage solely because of the sex of the partners. All arguments in opposition are irrational, illogical, or based on ignorance, animus, fear, or religious superstition or myth.

There is no rational basis for creating a "separate but equal" institution for establishing kinship between unrelated adults when a perfectly suitable one already exists: civil marriage.

And as is usual, they don't actually follow through on their logic that biology is supposed to dictate who is allowed to legally marry and who isn't. If they were consistent then they'd also deny legal marriage to heterosexual couples who are incapable of conceiving without medical assistance, or who can't conceive a child at all (such as women who are past menopause, men who are impotent, etc.)

We are holding a debate and we want your participation.#uqgaymarriage

A cohort of MBA students from University of Queensland are conducting a closed debate on the subject of “Same Sex Marriage – battle for equality, political leverage or institutional trademark?”. Whilst the debate will not be publicly broadcast, we will be running a live Twitter feed both prior to and during the debate. We are seeking a range of views via this Twitter feed.

The debate will commence from 9:00am Brisbane (Australia) time on Sunday 24th March. Contributions can be made on Twitter via #UQgaymarriage. Leading questions will include:

1. What does marriage mean?
2. With legal rights having been broadened for same sex couples, why is same sex “marriage” an issue now and how it has been successfully made an issue?
3. Whilst there is attention and momentum in the societal debate, why can’t same sex advocates break the legislative dead-lock?
The feed will be broadcast live to the cohort. We welcome all comments, opinions and insights. We welcome debate amongst Twitterers, all we ask for participants to be respectful of all others opinion. As the debate won’t be broadcast live, we will be encouraging your Twitter feeds to generate more debate.

It seems to me that all this hue and cry on the part of religious fundamentalists and other crazies would be inane and even stupid were it not for the fact that down deep these people know that gay marriage is the best idea to come along since the institution of marriage itself became not only acceptable but all but mandatory--when clearly it flies in the face of logic for those who, for their own reasons, have never seen the need for it. What is wrong with walking alone? And what is wrong with sleeping alone? So many persons who oppose gay marriage apparently think it's all about two persons of the same gender wanting nothing but sexual activity. That is absurd. Most gay couples want the joy of being together and the legal right to speak for one another should that become necessary. It seems to me inhumane to deny two persons of the same gender the rights that a traditional married couple take for granted and enjoy and their union is unquestioned--even when it might conceivably be unhappy. Yet they remain yoked for the sake of children or finances or whatever other reason they view as perfectly valid. What is interesting is that most people who find same sex marriage reprehensible will thrust the Bible in the face of proponents of same sex unions, all the while pointing to some verse or passage that they insist supports their reason for being in opposition to two persons of the same sex establishing and preserving a perfectly natural and loving relationship. Why must they always drag God or Jesus into the fray? God keeps silent and Jesus, during his tenure here, never issued one word on the subject of any kind of marriage. I feel that most people who rush into marriage are terrified of being alone in the world and so they rush to the altar and commit themselves for a lifetime to another individual of the opposite sex to avoid aloneness as if it were lethal. This is 2013 and it is time, it seems to me, to let one's humanity rule the day and this can be accomplished in large part by letting two people of the same sex who truly love each other unite in the union that marriage provides for their straight counterparts. Who or what is harmed by it? I fully endorse gay marriage and the reasons therefor. So does Jesus Christ whom I serve in my heart and with my mind. Too much babbling on the part of people, especially those who don't know what they are talking about, generally creates incivility. Live and let live. Life here on this planet is not forever.

Polygamous marriage was teh norm amongst the Jews in Jesus' time. The Jews who converted to Christianity at that time surely didn't divorce some of their wives to become Christians.

It was the pagan Romans and other pagan groups who practiced monogamy, not the New Testament Jews and Christians.

So one could argue that today's Christian fundies who are adamant about maintaining "traditional marriage" are actually defending a pagan practice, and NOT the traditions of the ancinet Jews and early Christians. Shame on them !

Most of the Grand Old Party, especially the neo-cons wish to establish their own little theocracy based entirely on their 'feelings and beliefs' and harshly punish any one who disagrees. Look at the Middle East, there's a fine example of fundamentalists controlling the government.

Then why do they consistently say they want to reinforce that the USA is Christian, and espouse particular religious views like no marriage equality using religious justification?

You're in Canada ! Who the hell cares what you think and say about the United States' political parties ?!

I guess you just THANK GOD that you live in the WONDERFUL People's Demokratik Socialist Republik Of Kanada instead of the awful adn evil U.S.A.!

Since the U.S. is SO BAD, how about we spend a few billion dollars building a tunnel from our southern border to your border, so the millions of people constantly illegally entering our awful country, can simply bypass us and go directly to yours, where they can sit on your beautiful beaches 24 hours a day drinking pina coladas in your wonderful "Workers' Paradise" that never seems to have a single problem at all ?
