Over the past year or so, the marriage equality bill has essentially served as a filter through which New Zealand has discussed queer sexuality and gender identity.

People who practice homosexual behavior are a small minority (most estimates 3%). Why should such a small minority dictate marriage rules for the vast majority?
Let those who practice homosexual behavior, who self-identify (post labels on themselves) as "gay", make their own social traditions and leave normal people alone.

I don't think they are trying to dictate to others, they are just asking for their rights to be gay and have the government screw them over just like they do everybody else. Gays are not changing the marriage rules unless they demand that brothers can marry brothers, sisters can marry sister's etc. which they are not to my knowledge. Parents can not marry their children, and vice versa. O have not heard of any gay folks asking for that either.

Of course NO ONE is trying to do that, expect people like yourself. No gay person has EVER tried to deny any heterosexual the right to legally marry, and NO gay person has ever tried to change the law so that everyone would be required to marry someone of the same gender.

The truth is that allowing someone who is gay to marry the single non-related adult of their choice, as ALL straight people can ALREADY do, won't change a thing for any heterosexual married couple today, or any who will marry in the future.

The majority doesn't have a right to create laws specifically designed to harm a minority, based only on animus or religious fervor, or ignorance. There needs to be a rational and compelling state interest to create such laws.

And you know there is none in this case.

You took the words right out of my mouth, but I'd like to add a bit to it if you don't mind.

John, the GLBT community isn't trying to dictate to the rest of the world; it is the people that you are so pleased to refer to as "normal" that is trying to dictate terms to the GLBTs. All they want is to be accepted and if the "normal" people can't do that, the homosexuals just want to be left alone. Why can't you see that?
