It,s a while ago since my commend on sharia laws,and read again people attacking eachother,why?It's not about wrong or right in personal matters,but what exepting sharia laws means for a country, especially woman.It will not improve the lives off females and make it more difficult then it allready is,it will mean a big stap backwards and itt will only be in advantage for man.I believe in equal rights for both and above all in human rights,one is impossible without the other.And in the meantime a lot is happenning to get really worried;taking off the air from a free broadcasting service,the possible execution in september from people against the political system,arresting gay people,so be aware things are going fast in the wrong direction and don't think it's not going to happen it's happening allready.

the president has always been like this, arresting & bullying peoe yet all voted for him again.we an all bla bla about human rights but theze are just stories doesnt mean they are going to be enforced.

i read he did this before saying he was going to execute prisoners but he didnt carry it out.

Well it's alway's good to read that it is a"normal"situation and all in the game, so i can stop being worried.Just one little question keeps on going in my mind;do people vote him because they like him so much or out off fear? And offcourse human rights are all bla bla when you don't respect them and accept the bullying.
One just has to believe that barking dogs don't bite,just watch you'r trousers.
Or maybe is it the truth that the killers in high places allway's pray the loudest.

Well said, I agree with every word. I guess it's all down to control, and fear of losing power. Remember he gained power as a penniless lieut. who staged a coup. Now he's a multi-millionaire with interests in all of the major companies in the Gambia. He knows how he got that power so he is paranoid of losing to someone like himself who could stage a similar coup. Fear and paranoia and the thought that it could all slip away from him as it did from his predecessor.

This is not the first independend radio station that's been shut down, another 'free' station was shut down a couple of years ago when I was there, and what about the editor of the independent newspaper 'The Voice' who 'disappeared presumed murdered.

It's so sad and so unfair, that ordinary Gambians who have the daily indignity of living below the poverty line on a couple of dollars a day, no hope, no opportunity and lack of education are also denied a voice.

i asked people who were in gambia at the time of the voting and the people were celebrating. of course he politition so lies always involved. this man kidnapped people & used strange methods on them. i am not saying this man is good for gambians, reporters gone missing. he VERY paranoid man who accuses his own army generals of wanting to overthrow him all the time. far from him being sain,other countries like AMerica have close connections to the gambia and i think this actually stops some of the things he threatens to do,unfortunately not all.he barks like a mad dog and i hope others are watching closely so he does not bite.

don't put words in my mouth femina....what are you going to do if he follows through with his threats..... egypt... tunisia..... libya.... now siria.... hopefully it will not get to such extreme measures and more deaths

It's not my intention to put words into your mouth,that's the way i understood them and i read it several times before i reacted.
Good to know that the intention was different and you allso have you'r concerns,so excuse me.

And i'm gone do what i allway's do, write as much as possible to bring it to peoples attention on many sides and not just about Gambia,like you said there are more countries.Keeping contacts abrought.Go on with amnesty and work for the red cross.And alway's keep hoping that in a long term written words will feel like an knife and have the effect off a boomerang.

BBC Africa today confirmed the execution of nine prisoners. The bodies of nine death row inmates were found yesterday in Mile Two Central Prison. Seven were Gambians and two were Senegalese .

It's a sad day for the Gambia and Gambian people. It will also effect tourism.

unfotunately this will not be the first time these excecutions have happened not when it comes to the person running the gambia. presidents who treat the whole country & people like it their very own playground.

Very true Commupence, and what is really scary is that given the corruption which exists in the police and military how justified are the charges and how credible is the evidence against those who are arrested incarcerated and executed. Frightening really.

I have a small and seemingly unrelated comparison, but I believe it answers your question.
During communism The Communist Party had about 98% of votes in some countries. Altogether there were 3-5 parties in the country. Do you think it was because people loved Communists? Or Comrade Lenin, as we were taught at school (since preschool years until postgraduate degree AND during the whole working lives training lessons)?

when marx&engels wrote their capital book, nobody was dreaming communism it'll be worse than capitalism. people were enough of poverty after the second war world and they were thinking they'll live better. but, they cheatted themselves.
so, 1989 they stopped...finishing with execution of n.ceausescu and his wife. a part of romanian people liked that life, another part didnt like. ceausescu was eliminated by "his loyal" camarazi.
after 1989 punishment with death was stopped in romania. if romanian authorities&security wanted to eliminate somebody, they had method without traces like to send someone by force in psychiatric hospital where they were poisoned, radiations, elektrical shocks...i was in prison political for having a child with a black guy, four months my daughter was staying at the window waiting for me to come back. security was coming to school to ask her certain questions. i found later. luckly, she was protected by teachers being loved and appreciated as student.
sharia is a real danger for gambian people...
