Actually, you can turn a base metal into gold. Physicists have been doing it for decades. Of course the cost of doing so is more than one million dollars per microgram, so it's not worth doing.
btw, humans have been mining gold for about 7000 they say. If you took all the gold that has ever been mined in the past 7000 years, melted it down and cast it into bricks, and then piled all the gold bricks together into a cube, what would be the length of each side of the cube ?
(btw, the volume of the Earth is about 260,000,000,000 cubic miles).
