Gay couples begin booking weddings in Maine

Mar 3, 2013 Full story: WCSH-TV Portland 25

Gay couples are booking wedding dates in Maine for the warm weather ahead, but inns and wedding venues aren't expecting a deluge of new business like Massachusetts experienced when it became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage nearly a decade ago.

I must say I'm surprised that so many of the East Coast states are so far ahead of the West Coast states on this issue, considering that the West Coast states are always portrayed as far more liberal.

50 briefs supporting equality demonstrate there is no legitimate governmental excuse to deny marriage equality for same sex couples.

Links to PDF copies of major amicus briefs filed in support of the constitutional challenge to California's Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that eliminated equal marriage rights for same-sex partners:

I like that line about them not expecting a deluge of business. Well that could be explained by the fact that they came so late to the party. Just as here in the Midwest, with Iowa having it already, and Illinois about to start, I would imagine that if Missouri ever gets it, most of the g/l folks here would already have married in one of those other states.

I feel sorry for the normal, decent folks in Maine.

Don't forget that Mainers could marry in Canada long before they could marry in Massachusetts. There is no waiting period and there are no blood tests in New Brunswick--nor, I believe, the other Atlantic provinces. Quebec has no licensing, but notification must be posted 20 days in advance at the location of the ceremony and at the nearest court house. Mainers have, of course, been able to marry in the rest of New England for several years. So it was very easy, no matter where they lived.

Why is that?

It hasn't seemed to have had any effect upon "the normal, decent people in" Massachusetts, Iowa, New Hampshire, New York ......

The majority of normal, decent people in Maine voted for equality. I am happy that they're getting what they wanted.

The straight people !:) The straight people owe us BILLONS of dollars in reparations which The Obamaniac has promised us. We'll all retire as millionaires, spend all our millions on sex, drugs, and circuit parties, and will rule over all of you !:)

That's what The Obamaniac PROMISED us !:)

You've already been doing this since the hippy movement as it is FaFoxy. How the hell do you think we got into the predicament we are in? The dollar in your pocket is going down. You continually avoid my assertions and requests of your thoughts about Pahana and your claim of full blood Indian. If I do not receive any reply on your lineage I'll be left to assume you have none and are lying like so many others I corner here on topix. We The Sheeple is one, as you well know.
So let's hear it.

East coast states founded the nation, have better schools, are smarter, more serious, and less baked.

My own biased opinion FWIW.

With the dozens of so many other issues facing the nation, let alone the world, how can anyone with a sound mind take you or this President seriously?
Thank God for healthcare.
This President has no plan.
This President had no plan.
Goodbye Rome
Now this really does sound like somebody on mind-altering substances. Have you backslid?

The President is way smarter than you, and is doing just fine. If the right wing wackadoos get more power, then we'll have problems. Talk about not having a plan, all they do is waste time on mini-abortion laws and cheating to win the next election rather than jobs, debt, etc.

I give Obama huge credit. I agree with his way of thinking, but he has far better control of his temperament than I. I would have gone off on those irresponsible screwball tea party losers in the House by now, obstructing everything and accomplishing nothing.

Yup! Sounds to me like one refusing to admit that,
a. This is his economy.
b. This is his debt.
Fifth year and counting while conservative states like Texas have low unemployment and jobs.
NNNEXT!
How many of those workers in Texas have to be subsidized with SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, Section 8, etc. by people in decent staes who pay most of the taxes?
