This story is untrue. The Lords turned back an attempt to stop the law from progressing by voting against a measure introduced by the uber-conservative Lord Dear. The victory was sizable. But that doesn't mean the marriage law was passed. Nor that it WILL pass. The size of the nay vote was enlarged by even conservatives who were angry at Lord Dear's crappy approach to stopping the bill at the second reading. The bill now advances in the Lords to a full line-by-live discussion and debate before a third reading and eventual vote to approve or deny. There was no voice vote; I have no idea where either the Guardian or Edge got this info, but it's wrong.

Any journalist who uses the Guardian as a source should be out selling papers, not writing for them.

We ARE talking about "Edge" e-zine here aren't we, luv. From time to time they can make "The Guardian" seem positively respectable.

The headline was certainly misleading. But the story itself largely supports your own summary:
The Guardian also points out the because the measure passed by such a large margin, the bill "must now be certain to become law." But it is likely those against the gay marriage bill will still try to amend it, hoping to strengthen the protections for churches who do not want to hold same-sex ceremonies.

The bill will now move on to the Committee stage in the House of Lords. After that, it must clear two more levels in the House of Lords before going to the Consideration of Amendments and Royal Assent.

"The Lords voted by 390 votes to 148 to reject an attempt by Lord Dear, a crossbencher, to defeat the bill at second reading,"

This means it will pass and become law.
all else is wishful thinking and prayers to the invisible beyond the clouds.
