KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) continued to be in the red for the sixth quarter, with net losses of RM349.25mil in the second quarter ended June 30, 2012, though the losses had narrowed compared with RM526.68mil a year ago.

It announced on Tuesday revenue fell 5.06% to RM3.301bil from RM3.477bil a year ago following the Route Rationalisation programme in late 2011 and early 2012 to cut several loss making and low yielding routes. Loss per share was 10.45 sen compared with 15.76 sen.

MAS said it had managed to reduce operating loss to RM102mil compared with RM443mil a year ago.

"The significant 77% improvement in performance year-on-year (y-o-y) at the operating level was due to efforts in the pricing and revenue management area plus lower fuel costs and lower passenger-related costs in line with capacity cuts," it said.

MAS said its Q2 operating loss was lower than the operating loss of RM307mil in the Q1 ended March 31, 2012.

The airline's group expenditure fell 13% on-year to RM3.4bil. Fuel costs, which accounted for 37% of expenditure, fell 18% to RM1.3bil following a 15% drop in consumption.

During the same quarter, jet fuel price fell to an average US$132 per barrel from US$140 per barrel y-o-y. Non-fuel costs dropped 10%.

MAS said losses in the first half narrowed to RM521.04mil from RM769.02mil while revenue declined 3.7% to RM6.415bil from RM6.667bil.

Its group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the much improved Q2 results, compared against the performance year-on-year and even the first quarter of 2012, "show that the tough decisions taken earlier to suspend high loss-making routes is showing results".

MAS carried over 3.26 million passengers in Q2 compared to 3.5 million on-year. Seat load factor was 73.9% compared to 75.5% in the same period last year. Airline passenger revenues were down 6% y-o-y against a 10% reduction in operating capacity on-year.

Ignore whatever BS the Indons copy paste here. They don't even analyse the figures.

Other than losses registered for both airlines, we look at the cash balances as at 30 June 2012:

Garuda - USD 254 mil
MAS - USD 600 mil

Garuda performance is far from excellent based on this report:
http://www.securities.com/Public/company-prof...

"According to the Consolidated - Non-Audited financial statement for the first quarter of 2012, total net operating revenues decreased with -99.99%, from USD 5,189,323.35 millions to USD 717.45 millions. Operating result increased from USD -258,726.28 millions to USD -13.06 millions which means 99.99% change. The results of the period increased 99.99% reaching USD -10.71 millions at the end of the period against USD -183,663.06 millions last year. Return on equity (Net income/Total equity) went from -2.84% to -1.17%, the Return On Asset (Net income / Total Asset) went from -1.12% to -0.50% and the Net Profit Margin (Net Income/Net Sales) went from -3.54% to -1.49% when compared to the same period of last year. The Debt to Equity Ratio (Total Liabilities/Equity) was 133.72% compared to 153.36% of last year. Finally, the Current Ratio (Current Assets/Current Liabilities) went from 1.27 to 0.99 when compared to the previous year."

Garuda's debt to equity ratio is improving, however there is a decrease in current ratio which explains the decrease in cash balance of nearly USD 250 mil as of first half of 2012.

However there'll be favourable increase in revenue for both airlines due to holiday season. And MAS may narrowed down its losses for 2012. MAS has reduced its group operating costs by 13% and core net loss will go down to USD 55 mil afer filtering foreign exchange losses and fair value of change derivatives, as compared to more than USD 160 mil losses in the previous year.

Based on this, net loss has decreased significantly compared to the previous year. Operating losses decreased from RM443 mil last year to RM102 mil. Which means the management is on the right track. New and improved routes are expected to boost revenue in the coming years.

Akibat kebangkrutan, direksi MAS berupaya memindahkan kantor operasional mereka dari kompleks Bandar Udara Internasional Kuala Lumpur, Kota Subang Jaya, Negara Bagian Selangor.

Nasib Proton sebelas dua belas, ketika dua tahun lalu pernah rugi hingga 61 juta ringgit. Kini pabrik mobil nasional didirikan pada 1997 ini telah diakuisisi oleh Badan Penyehatan khusus DRB Hicom Bhd.[NG/MDK]

If you're smart, use your intelligence to understand what is written in the WSJ. if you are not smart, you'd better learn some more harder than you're wasting time here to show your ignorance.

You don't understand the whole article, do you? I posted again here. What is your explanation on the said losses incurred?

"JAKARTA—Flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia -1.47% said Monday it booked $2.02 million in net losses during the first six months of the year compared with a net loss of $22.40 million a year earlier as higher revenue was offset by greater operating costs.

Revenue for the January-to-June period rose to $1.51 billion from $1.28 billion.

However, operating costs rose 14% to $1.50 billion from $1.32 billion.

Cash on hand as of June 30 was $253.99 million compared with $490.57 million.

The company didn't provide an explanation for the first-half performance."
