I'm writing concerning an article that was in your paper on June 14 titled "Great Lakes sailors make 'living' flag for Flag Day." I was there...Ninth star. Company 201. Not sure why this was not done on FLAG DAY, June 14. I have the photo and certificate, but not the newspaper article describing why it was done in 1917.

Anyone interested in contacting me may write to: P.O. Box 92, Dallastown, PA 17313

My father was part of the blue this day. We have an old, crumbling newspaper clipping, but no other photos.

It was so nice to find mention of this online.:)

I was one of the 10,000 sailors from Great Lakes that created a living flag at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 8, 1967. I was in the graduating Boot Camp battalion (Company 192) that marched around the field and then became the "flag pole" for the flag. It was billed as the "Mid-America salute to the flag" As a side note, this was the 1st Boot Camp graduation to take place away from Great Lakes.
I also have an 8 x 10 photo of this flag!

I was part of the blue field ( had to wear a blue plastic bag over uniform) Boot Camp Company 223. I have never seen the photo or article, but would like to.

My father mentioned the plastic bag when I asked him about the flag. He said it was a hot day and the plastic made it worse!

He turned 64 this year as well.

Al, Just taking a look around at the Soldier Field and found your post. I too was there. I was in 22nd Batt, Company 190. I too was part of the "POLE" I remember it all so well. We marched around the inside of the stands until it was our turn. I too have the picture in my cruise book! I also remember some idiot dropping a buch of mustard packets on the deck so men marching would step on them squirting them at the man next to you. Then came the trip home and washing the leggins to be ready for inspection the next day.

I have always wondered who was in the pole who got the pole all screwed up with the gap in it????? Was that Company 192. I know it wasn't 190....LOL. Wow, a long time ago. I never thought about it until today. OH! I remember men had red and blue plactic bags for their white hats to make the stars and stripes.
Got my orders and went to the SEABEES and off to Vietnam. Sure was young then.
Thanks for the post!

My father was among these 10,000 soldiers that created the living flag on July 8, 1967. He was in the 13th star. He was also chosen to take a picture with Ms. Illinois. I wished I could get a picture of this flag and of him with Ms. Illinois.

Joe, my father was in this picture created in 1967. He does not remember off hand what his company number was. He was part of the 13th star in this picture. He was also chosen to take a picture with Ms. Illinois. I would love to get a copy of the photo and certificate as a surprise for him. He is 81 now and has been very sick the last month. My fathers name is James Curtis Brown. We lived in Great Lakes Illinois until 1970. I will write you.
