While I'm suspicious of most self defense pleas, this one sounds like it may have been authentic, due to the fact that as soon as possible the home owner held the suspect at gun point instead of shooting him dead. Of course there's a small chance that we aren't getting the whole story yet, but if the person with the gun allows the other to live, it's pretty clear that the intent was not to harm but to defend.
