One year after 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by an armed neighborhood watchman, setting off a national debate about race and gun laws, the campaign to change state self-defense laws in Martin's name has petered out.

Before a jury votes to take a human life, they need lots and lots of evidence and difficult decisions need to be made. Yet, you can gun someone down at a moments notice and yell you "Stood Your Ground?"
The problem with the law is that too many people don't understand it, including some of the cops. You have the right to shoot someone if they are threatening to you. That does not include chasing them down, comforting them and then when THEY attempt to defend themselves, you then kill them
Private guards and cops have uniforms and marked vehicles for identification. Neighborhood watch groups do not. They are also not licensed but mainly, they do not have the right to approach you, ask you questions, follow you and certainly not chase you down. Zimmerman did not have that right with Travyon Martin and he does not have that right with you or any other citizen.

Yeah but seems people like you would rather have a law called "Bend over and take it".

I understand that laws like this should be made very clear but cases change and if someone intends to do harm the longer you wait the more likely you are to be a victim.

My advice is test out some ideas to what you feel it should read like and see how others agree or would like to tweak it.

By the way the "Bend over and take it" law was a joke ;p

I agree that the law should have strict guidelines and standards, but this was not a case of Zimmerman shooting because he just felt like it. He shot in self defense because he was getting his head bashed in on the concrete and very well could have died from that. He simply protected himself.

As much as I don't agree with everything Mr. Zimmerman did, he wasn't in the process of confronting Travyon Martin but going back to his car when Travyon confronted Mr. Zimmerman. Then, he ASSAULTED Mr. Zimmerman, who felt his life was being threatened, pulled his gun and fired. I don't see a problem with that. As far as I know from the facts of the case, Mr. Zimmerman never ran after Travyon Martin, waving the gun at him saying "Stop" or "Halt" causing the confrontation he just followed him and proceeded back toward his car.
