First, this is a woman who has lied to authorities with no discomfort. What she is saying about her relationship with the deceased can not be argued because the other person involved was killed by her. This gives her great incentive to lie about the circumstances and thus her credibility is shaky at best.
Secondly, even if all of what she has testified to date is true, and I seriously doubt that, there was no abuse. She entered into a consensual sexual relationship with the victim. Within a week, she was engaging in sexual activity with someone who she barely knew. I have no qualms about that. People have the right to sleep with whoever they want. Having sex with someone, however, doesn't entitle you to a long term commitment. Both parties need to agree on the direction or course of the relationship. This was not the first relationship Arias was exposed to. By her own account, she engaged in sexual activity, including anal sex, with past boyfriends. According to prior girlfriends of Alexander, he was not sexually experienced. Is it possible that he wasn't a virgin? Sure. But what difference does that make?
So what if he was Mormon? This trial is in a court of law, not a church. It is not against the law to have sex with a woman who is offering it, even if it goes against a belief system, and even if he is hiding this relationship from others within his church. Going counter to church rules does not make anyone an abuser. If it did, 99% of the population would fall under this category. Additionally, it is beyond disingenuous for Arias to claim that she was ignorant of church rules regarding chastity, where anything outside of vaginal intercourse is deemed virginal. The woman was well read and was not duped by prior boyfriends in their beliefs of vampires, for example. She knew how to use a computer, which was illustrated by her spying into boyfriend's online accounts. Someone who has been around the block with numerous men, and who has a history on the internet, is savvy enough to Google the LDS rules. This "surprise anal sex" after baptism story reeks of sensational lies in order to tarnish the victim and sway possible congregation members on the jury into despising Alexander.
Again, even if she is being completely honest, low self esteem does not excuse murder. Low self esteem in combination with not being treated well, or being used for sex, does not equal imminent danger requiring someone to defend themselves by killing someone else. If it did, teenage girls would surely be the number one demographic with blood on their hands.
