is this artisan center really as great for all of us as this article makes it seem? could this type of thing replace coal as our source of jobs?
Waste of Tax Money

Those people aren't even from Eastern Kentucky!I can't imagine any normal person would buy their crap either. I saw a wooden statue of a mushroom there that cost $300! These people are "check drawers", set around all day doing nothing while the working people pay their salary. Go to Hindman anyday of the week and see them walking around town doing nothing!!!

A waste of taxpayer money enjoyed by a few tree huggers but paid for with tax dollars and coal severance money. A few years ago an article in the Troublesome Creek Times laid out the master plan for Hindman and Knott County. The plan is for Hindman to become an education mecca and the county would provide support and service. The population will consist of the educated " upper class" and uneducated " lower class" to provide services and to perform menial tasks for the "upper class". The article also stated there would only be a limited number of jobs for the "lower class" and the remainder would have to migrate out. We have no input or say so in the matter, the powers that be have decided our fate. Ever since that article I've voted republican hoping to change the powers that be. Regardless of what they think I do have some input and that is to vote them out. A die hard democrat now voting republican.

i guess all that basketweaving and whittling is expensive. i would love to see the cost on all these artison projects that have been pushed down our throats the last ten years. it probably would pay for three sportsplexes. and has any of this stupidity produced one job for anyone from knott county? all of these weirdos are from other places. what a scam.

something can be done. the fiscal court can pull a sarah palin and say "thanks but no thanks" and send that coal severance money back to frankfort until we come up with a better way to spend it. enough money has been poured down this artisan rathole.

The appalachian artisan centers survives on some grants and and donations from people. We own our buildings through a grant. We work hard there to sell over 200 artisans from eastern kentuckys work. These are our grnadpas and yes it is expensive cause these people have their heart and souls in their work. We are trying to make hindman a happening place. we have lots of tour groups and lots of great local customers. So dont judge before you come in and chat with us...All of us that work there are from knott county except for our director which is from perry county...we support all the local businesses and they support us. Nothing is fishy with the money that comes in....trust me we barely make it...

Are only Knott Countians considered Eastern KY? Why is someone from Perry or Floyd considered an outsider? Whether it is Floyd, Perry, Letcher, etc, isnt anyone from one of these counties from Eastern, KY? And what is wrong with trying to bring turists into Knott County to spend their money? If they buy art, it helps a local artist and their family. But when they come to buy art they also buy gas, food and other items that bring money to Knott County. Why is it so hard to comprehend that anything we can do to make our county better, benefits us all in the long run?

Because people around here are backward and don't want any kind of prosperity. They're arrogant, and don't consider any other counties a part of Eastern Ky, and are therefor dubbed "outsiders". Somehow, they've figured in their warped little heads that having enough socio-economic problems to make Haiti look like Hawaii makes them better than everyone else. There's something about this world that they 'get' that the rest of us don't. Being an artist or being intelligent is looked down on, and the only noble profession is shoveling coal. Until they wake up and stop being ignorant and combative about EVERYTHING ANYONE EVER SAYS, then no one is going to benefit from anything, because there will continue to be absolutely nothing. And rest assurred, they have no problem with that what so ever.

u know what the real problem here isnt the artisan center at all its the ones taking county money to build on driveways and pools and excuse me we dont need another park and just as soon as the county put there so called community service workers to work me and 3 family members lost our jobs and got replaced by the goody no goodies ive got a family and so do my cusin and brother oh they are looking out for the comunity but who is looking after our family they claim its a way to save the county money must be one heck of a huge drive way they plan on paving or wait is it being used to build a mansion this time i havent had a job in two and a half years so i have had to rely on foodstamps and medical assistance to support my 3 kids no what they get for christmas since then nuthin atleast we were pros at our jobs trained to do them correctly so who trained these people on probation will it realy save our county or will the county be out even more in replacing and correcting what these people destroy cant wait to see the out come of this....i spoke to 1 young lady who is one of the workers and i was at first blaming them for the loss of my job but she said sumthin that really changed my mind she said" sir im sorry u lost ur job but none of us are volunteers we are being forced by courts to do this id much rather have a paying job rather than to have to spend every nickle of mone in my pocket just trying to pull off free labor for a self centered people who dont apreciate free slavery i dont want to be mean but i didnt know they fired or laid off anyone and replaced em with us so dont blame us blame hindman and its officials who claim this is good" im sorry to those i wrongfully accused them so if there are others out there who lost their job because of this feel free to make comments

Its a flippin joke...sad thing is the joke is on the people of knottco. someone really should request an audit for all the money that was brought in to hindman 10 years ago.....were talkin millions of dollars ...where did it go...we have nothing to show for it.....i mean seriously..selling a few old knick-knacks that look like they were made by second graders is just a slap in the face. a lot of people got rich and now they can sit back and laugh

Yep, and that's exactly what I did. The difference? My opinion is based on observation.

You use yours to reinforce mine.
