Local organization needs help getting homeless vets off street

A Westwego woman has pled guilty to theft of government funds in a Katrina fraud case, according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.
Lisa N. Carey, 43, applied for FEMA and SBA benefits after Katrina, stating that she lived in Springfield. Investigators found that Carey did not live at the Springfield address.
Carey had submitted a false building permit, two false residential leases and two false furniture repair bills to the SBA to get them to release funds from her business and home loans. The total loss to FEMA is $2000 and to SBA the loss was $60,000. Carey has agrees to full restitution to both agencies.
Carey faces a fine a maximum of $250 thousand and ten years in prison. Sentencing is set for March 24.
