As prisoners, they're only entitled to have their basic needs met. Many working, law abiding citizens eat the basics because they can't afford anything better. Why should prisoners be entitled to meals that some tax paying citizens can't even enjoy???. We can't starve them but we certainly don't have to offer them restaurant-quality dining either.
We are seriously worried about the quality of a prisoners food when so many children and veterans in the USA go hungry on a daily basis ? Prison isn't supposes to be the Hilton, it is there to deter future inmates, criminals from becoming a parasite to society. I say make some cut backs on what is spent on them, and use that money for schools.

My savior was a Criminal, imprisoned for breaking the Law!
He was found to have violated "laws" that were supported by the public
They fed him crap, then executed him.

I guess that taught him a lesson and detered others from criminal acts.

Wait....no his freinds were criminals to, society fed them to lions, hung um on crosses and even cut them into small chunks.Iguesthat was a deterent...at least for those "criminals"

Dang!!...well at least they wont commit anymore crimes. And society got their "pound of flesh" so justice was served. fainess wasmaintained...and the people no longer lived in fear......

Get a clue people!

Your "tough justice" answers neglect to consider that treating prisoners like animals endangers the WARDENS and GUARDS that are there to stand between them and society. Clueless, all of you.
If I may take a minute of your time. I worked in corrections in the early 90's. There is no need to treat these people like animals. They are animals. Grown adults acting like adolesants living in a child ego state. They manipulate the system, they are all victims in their own mind, they are all on medication even if its ibuprofen and what they can't get by manipulation they resort to threats. Frankly they are punks. The sad part is many of them are extremley intelligent but unable to use it in a constructive way. Anyone who has been in law enforcement knows how these people are. The average person is just another potential victim. I have stories that would keep you entertained for days.

What happens to other mammals when they spend their lives in a cage?

Do they "act like" normal dogs, cats, or monkeys?

And after years of being in a cage they are not allowed to live like the other monkeys in their culture. They are forced to live outside the group, act in a way the group is offended by, and then they are re-caged as bad monkeys.

Your liberal idiotic mind needs to get a clue. Your either a current perp or a perp with priors. These people made choices that took away their freedom because the judicial system deemed them as a danger to society. To put it in simple language they don't play well with others. They lost the right to be free and exercise the liberties lawabiding citizens enjoy because they demonstrated anti-social behavior that makes them a threat to society. What do you suggest, letting them go. No one forced them to commit crime or are you a bigger idiot then I think and you advocate society is to blame.
Whats next? You gonna throw the race card? WAKE UP!!

And your point would be what? That they are therefore worthy of starvation?

There is plenty of things you can feed yourself for 1.75 a day. Particularly if they were to buy in bulk. Sandwiches are cheap. They dont need anything fancy. If they want better, don't do stuff to get thrown in jail.

I say you are 1/4 degree off the same mind set of the men you were able to dominate as a gaurd. The power trip that satisifed some deep seated shortcomming (Beat up on the playground a lot? "now they are gonna git it!"), makes you the same if not worse than the men "You Chose"(made a choice) to dominate as a profession.

I would rather have the guy that made a mistake, as my neighbor when he got out of prison, than some sicko that chose to be in prison on some psyco power trip, abusing the authority he gets from weapons and a shield.

As someone who currently works in the MN. prison system I applaud the people of Alabamma. If people only knew how good MN. treats its prisoners on your tax dollar, there would be a revolt!! Prisoners in MN. get better health care then a lot of elderly and working people. They get fed much better then a lot of people onthe street. A lot of the people currently in MN. prisons could not live this well legally on the street!! Also irregardless of what people want you to believe, a lot of inmates are NOT from MN. They come to MN. from all over (CHICAGO, INDIANPOLIS, DETROIT,etc.) because of welfare and should they get caught, how well they are treated.
I have been working with inmates in some form for 25 yrs. and it just gets better for them and more costly for us. If MN. prisons are as badas it gets for these offenders,it isn't much of a detterent!! Prison is a place you are suppose to not want to come back to!
Although I will say sex offenders have it BETTER then regular inmates. The MSOP program costs $350 a day and has NEVER had a successful offender.

The msop men are not intended to get better. That is why they are there, mostly after serving their court ordered sentences....it is a civil commitment they are incarcerated under.

And if it wasnt for the steady stream of "Customers", resulting because more and more behavior is criminalized, they wouldnt have needed you for 25 years.

Be happy!!

Who the heck is suggesting restaurant quality dining? But you can barely feed a DOG on $1.75 a day. When the state incarcerates a citizen, they take on the responsibility of keeping them well: fed, housed and clothed ADEQUATELY.
No one can argue that $1.75 a day is adequate. No one. If you do, I question your humanity.
I am not advocating for $1.75 per day. What I meant was that something reasonable is somewhere between the two extremes. We can indeed meet a prisoner's basic food needs without being lavish...however, I believe that people have the image of them eating T-bones steaks and garlic mashed potatoes.

I Memphis, the SCDC, has a program. They grow their own vegetables, inmates are the chefs, which not only helps them to earn "time off" for working, it keeps costs low. The only thing they won't do there is butcher ( the danger of instruments) But the food there, was doable. No one starved, everyone's nutritional needs were met. It was more than $1.75 a day, but... it can and should be done. they also had commisary, like most prisons do, where the inmate can order, with their OWN money, all kind of goodies. So yes, they can survive on $1.75 a day for meals. I'm not sure who posted it, was a few back, but prisoners do have it to good. The only thing they are lacking, is the ability to come and go as they please... other then that, all their needs are met. If they don't like it there, make dam sure they don't come back when they get out. That's the idea. BEHAVE!

They just posted a story on left over horse meat in Puerto Rico, ship the dam things up here, make the prisoners butcher and cook them themselves. It will teach them skills. They will learn how to be cooks and butchers. Win, win. Show me the down side will you?
Normally I agree with your brilliant posts Gustav, but this time I am afraid I am going to have to put you in your place. Horse meat is much too good for them. It is my belief that they should be placed on a strictly vegan diet. Now that is torture and unusual punishment.
