Here Comes the Hike: 15% Increase in Fees Proposed by USPTO

Inventors and companies would face a new 15% surcharge on patent fees under the Obama administration's proposed budget, with the funds going to help the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to "improve the speed and quality of patent examinations." The head of the patent office floated the surcharge proposal late last year.

This is a bit of good news. However, informed patent law sources have told me that the USPTO's main problem has been not underfunding, but mismanagement. Hopefully, new Director Kappos will address the latter issue as well as the former.
