We're picking a new mascot...we're being told it's trademarked

Our institution is looking for a new mascot but we have some that are removing some of the top vote getters that the students picked.
Some favorites were removed because the administration is claiming that the mascots that were picked by students(multiple) are trademarked so they are only allowing mascots that are not trademarked.
This doesn't seem right. Some of the students picked Cavalry, Vipers, Toros.
Does being trademarked automatically make it impossible to pick those mentioned or can the institution ask for permission to use the word "Cavalry". With thousands of students choosing, is this something that can be done?
