Is it possible to patent method with..

Hi, this is just hypothetical.
Say someone patents a method which main aspect of it is using communication of text and the idea's foundation is using typing text.
But then comes along a second person and wants to patent a similar idea with basics of first patent but not quite because now the idea's foundation is based on using a telephone, and everything would be based solely on using a phone and talking. Would this be patentable?
