I've had nothing but problems since quiting chanix cold turkey 3 weeks ago. Terrible anxiety and depression. I also had and still have joint pain in my hands that developed while taking the Chantix. My Dr hadn't heard anything about either of these problems until I gave him copy and copy and pastes of the posts from others from this fourm. Hes been working with me and has me on Xanax and an antidepressant. The meds are helping but I have still have terrible bouts with the anxiety where I will can get very nasty with others. I suggested to my dr to put me back on the Chantix and to ween me off but he didn't want to do that since its been nearly 3 weeks since I had been off o fit although, I talked to a pharmacist and she said that update she recieved claimed that the withdrawal can last three months.

Sorry, my post went up twice on the board. The first one(under the name of "Mike") I didn't get any confirmation that it was posted plus I didn't see it and I hadn't registered so I figured I had to register in order to post which I did and then reposted. By the way, I'm not from Niles, Il like the post says, I'm from Cleveland Ohio.

Thanks Trish. I'm still smoke free(over 3 months-April 1st) and I was on the Chantix for 12 weeks. The joint pain now seems minor compared to this anxiety I've been experiencing. I'll worry about my joint pain once I get past the anxiety. Just to note; my Dr had diagnosed with with arthritis once this joint pain started a few weeks after I had started the Chantix. As far as everything I've going through, thank God for this forum and this thread that I've been following for nearly two weeks now. At least because of all of you I know what is happening. Thank You!

Also, Trish; I think the slow wean will do the trick for you. Best of luck with it and with quiting smoking!

My quit day was April 1st(July 1st being my 3 month anniversary of not smoking) and my last day of Chantix was June 15th. I was on Chantix for 12 weeks and my first day for the Chantix was 9 days before my actual quit date. March 23 I stated the Chantix and my 12 week period ended on June 15th. 3 weeks officially will be tomorrow that I stooped taking the Chantix. Keep in mind that my three month anniversary was a total of 91 days smoke free. Keep in mind that there are actually more than 4 weeks to an actual month and that I started the Chantix 9 days before my quit date.

Hello Mike,

I can empathize with you! I had the same problem, and it was NASTY!!! I couldn't handle it and started smoking again after a 3 month quit. I went back to the doctor. I'd been off Chantix for about 2 weeks. She put me back on Chantix, full strength, for ONLY TWO WEEKS. She had me buy the STARTER pack and take it BACKWARDS, it went like this:

2 weeks 1 mg 2x daily
1 week 1/2 mg 2x daily
1 week 1/2 mg only daily for a week
1 week 1/4 mg only for a week
1 week 1/4 every other day for a week
Then off Chantix

It worked great!! She also put me on Celexa which took 2 weeks to work, so when I started my wean I did great. You may want to confront your doctor again. Good Luck Mike

Viki ( still Smoke free, and going into my 7th month!!)

Trish, let me explain a little more. Tomorrow will be 15 weeks since I actually started taking the Chantix. March 23rd) Took it for 12 weeks( until June 15th) and tomorrow will mark 3 weeks since Iíve been off it. My quit date was April 1st(9 days after I started the Chantix so july 1st was my 3 month anniversary. Hope this helps.

viki, thanks for you input and advice. I'm seeing my Dr tomorrow and I'm going to suggest again to go back on it and then to wean me off. I also going to show him how you did it. Thanks again. By the way, how long id it take you to feel normal again after going back on the Chantix?

Viki, one question. Did your Dr put you back on teh hantix "full strength" only because you had gone back to smoking? I'm only asking because I'm wondering if I could skip the part of full strength and go right to, "1 week 1/2 mg twice daily" and continue from there.

Mike, You are welcome!

With taking the Celexa, I felt wonderful after it "Kicked" in, and after the SLOW WEAN off the Chantix, I felt and feel great! I felt just like I did taking the Chantix. I did keep the Chantix close by for a week or two. I was ready to take the 1/4 if necessary. That was one thing my doctor did say and I forgot to mention....she said if at any time I start to have an anxiety attack, take the dosage of Chantix that worked, and wean SLOWER. I really feel the Celexa has a lot to do with my feeling great, however my doctor will only let me stay on it for 9 months...OH NO!!!!!

What a lot of folks don't think about is nicotine is an antidepressant of sorts, and we have self medicated ourselves for many years, so when we stop taking it (smoking) we are left with the real, unmedicated, us. I think I had numbed or suppressed a lot of issues and feelings, and without the drug, nicotine, a lot of this stuff surfaced, thus the depression and anxiety....just a theory.

Good luck tomorrow and let us know what happens. What your pharmacist said was a little frightening!

Yes, but I will say it is getting better. I have been off the Chantix for 2 months now. I had the pain in my hands and really all over. It would be here today, gone tomorrow! It was like spinning a wheel to see where it would hurt today!!

Good question Mike, maybe so. As I think about it I really can't answer that. I do remember questioning her on that and all I can recall is she said again, get the STARTER pack and do it backwards, then wrote out the wean schedule on a piece of paper for me. I would think that what you suggested would work fine, but I think the trick is SLOW.........

Trish, I'm sure there are many who have not had any problem coming off of Chantix but just the same, it would have been very helpful if it would have been at least suggested to wean off the medication at the end of treatment to prevent a problem.

Its hard to imagine after the testing of this medication that there was no hint at all that some could suffer from withdrawal coming off of Chantix too quickly.

I hope its doesn't seem like I'm trying to argue, but this is the mood that this has all has put me in. I'm really not trying to argue. Just saying how I honesty feel. Maybe a month from now, when I feel better, I'll having different thoughts.

You are so right Mike!!! After almost $1000. in co-pays from going to the ER TWICE, with what turned out to be panic attacks from going off Chantix cold turkey, you don't know how much I would love to do a claim against Pfizer!!! Like you said, just a mention of the word, WEAN, would have been nice!!
