The most senior African American in Congress offered some unsolicited advice Monday to President Barack Obama on how to get his signature health care bill through a balky Senate: knock their heads together.

If this is all so wonderful, why do any heads need to be knocked to get it passed? By the way, John Conyers is on the record stating that bills need not be read by members of Congress before they are voted on. This is not about health care. It is about politicians controlling health care.

While I'm sure that Mr. Conyers didn't literally mean to violently bang the heads of dissenters together, it is an enlightening statement. It reveals Mr. Conyers approach to art of governence.

Generally speaking, I'm thinking that give and take negotiations aren't part of the agenda. Disagree and expect to have your "head knocked".

I am wondering why John Conyers is referred to as "the most senior African-American in Congress" instead of just a senior member of Congress. Isn't this the post-racial era that was to be swept in with Obama's victory? You don't see Joe Lieberman being introduced as a senior White-American Senator or Arnold as an Austrian-American Governor. If we are supposed to be getting beyond race, why don't the media and the people themselves put a stop to it? Why, because they really don't want it to go away. If it did, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be out of work, and many millions of Americans would lose their victim's card. I know this was a bit off topic, but it is an observation on how the article was written.
