Iowa mom seeks change after gay son rejected as eye donor

There are 25 comments on the WHAS11 story from Aug 18, 2014, titled Iowa mom seeks change after gay son rejected as eye donor. In it, WHAS11 reports that:

Sheryl Moore hoped at least in death the insults to her son would stop. Her son, A.J. Betts, took his own life in July 2013 in part, she believes, because of an unrelenting barrage of high school bullying about the 16-year-old's sexual orientation and race.

A.J.'s heart, lungs and kidneys all went to needy recipients for lifesaving surgeries. But other tissues such as bone, tendons and the corneas of his eyes were rejected because A.J. was gay and had an unknown sexual history.

The Iowa Donor Network asked if Moore had any questions about A.J.'s donations. She asked why his eyes weren't donated. They told her U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations prevent the donation of tissues not considered lifesaving from gay men who have had sex with other men or have an unknown sexual history.

The Iowa Donor Network and U.S. Food and Drug Administration did the right thing.

LGBT people and str8 allies who list themselves as donors should equally be able to specify that their organs not go to save the lives of fundie christianists or other homophobes.

If even one life has been spared by the ban on gay donors, then gays should consider the ban worth it. What does it say about gays if they can't see it that way?

It says you are mentally ill troll and stupid bigot, because heterosexuals are also prone to sexual and health histories which would make them as individuals high risk donors, yet heterosexuals are not banned as a class.

And we know statistically that some heterosexual donor's organs caused disease or death in some recipient(s).

The reason no one applies your "logic" is that despite any of these deaths from heterosexual donors the number of lives saved by heterosexual donors is more than offsetting....

As usual, the sick, homophobic defamations apply just as much or moreso to heterosexuals as a group. But closet cases are duty bound to never think of heterosexuals.

"or have an unknown sexual history"

Shouldn't pretty much everyone's sexual history be presumed "unknown?"

And... it is no more "the right thing" or reasonable, rational, or logical to ASSUME anything in particular about a gay teen's sexual history than it is to ASSUME anything about anybody else's sexual history.

Go ahead and test everything that can be tested. But the ASSUMPTION that someone's organs may be no good because they are gay is ridiculous.

I personally identify as bisexual, but have learned that many people, including many GAY people, make ignorant ASSUMPTIONS about my character AND my sexual history, based SOLELY on my self identifying as bisexual. MOST of their ASSUMPTIONS are wrong... and I don't have ANY sexually transmitted diseases.

I do however, have other health issues which may or may not effect whether my organs are fit to be donated, which have absolutely nothing to do with my sexual history.

To rubber stamp anyone's organs as unfit simply because they are gay is idiotic.

There is no such thing as a virus that only effects gay people, and ANY STD can be transmitted from ANYONE to ANYONE of ANY sexual orientation.

There you go again. Not because he was gay but because he may have been a sexually active gay. The gay teachers don't get fired from the church schools because they're gay, they get fired because they marry a same sex partner. The baker didn't refuse service to those gay men because they were gay, he did so because he didn't want to be associated with a gay wedding. None of it was because anyone was gay. To say so is to lie.

That's really sick across the board.

There was no basis for thinking this particular teen was any more sexually active or risk taking than any heterosexual of the same age.

It is obviously because he was gay. By definition.

The AMA and other medical groups think the FDA policies are based in prejudice. All blood and organs get tested. There has been no statistical risk of HIV transmission from a blood or organ donation in this country for decades.

What we have is very sick people lying all the time about lgbt people, but with a special emphasis on defaming gay men...since the defamers are men acting out their own sexual anxieties.

Don't look now, Cletus, but even that anti rational, bigoted version is now what happened in this egregious enough case.

They took the young man's organ donations which will be lifesaving.

It is only the eye donation they rejected.

Fundies and the sexually sick never know the first thing about anything. They can't keep basic facts "straight."

Of course that's how you respond to facts. How else could a sexually sick bigot who is wrong about everything respond?

All you could do is say the AMA has no idea about medical science. Or that you aren't exclusively fixated on male homosexuals.

But that would be lying on your part.

In the event you ever need a blood transfusion or an organ transplant, be sure to say no. After all, the blood or organ may have come from a gay person.

You completely missed my point and mentioned a lot of irrelevant crap that has nothing to do with this. In the case of organ donations, the one "assumption" that is reasonable to start from, is that anyone past the age of puberty MAY be sexually active. Whether or not they are gay is irrelevant. Test what needs to be tested regardless of sexuial orientation, since that in itself does not affect the viability of any organs.

That said, since his other organs WERE accepted, and presumably saved a few people's lives, this mom should try to get some perspective and not look for a battle where one really doesn't exist. I give her a pass for being distraught and greiving over her son, but she should be grateful that his heart, lungs, and kidneys helped others profoundly... and move on.

I haven't had the misfortune of visiting your homestead and your other room.

Stupid filth evilgelicals project maladies which far more accurately apply to heterosexual males out onto gay men. In the case of child sex abuse, the vast, overwhelming majority of it takes place right within the extended nuclear family, usually older males incesting younger females.
