Woke up after the 6th day of Chantix. Completely dizzy and off balance. My equilibrium is not right. Not worth it. And I'm on the 0.5 two times a day now for only three days. I'm hoping a ton of water and some exercise will get this drug out of my system in a few days. Rather go cold turkey. After reading these posts, I am getting off this stuff immediately.

I have two co-workers who had a great experience with Chantix, so I was optimistic going into this. Yesterday was Day #12 for me and the worst emotional experience I have ever felt. As a 1.5 pack per day smoker plus a daily user of chewing tobacco, I knew I had a big addiction to nicotine that needed to stop.
I started to notice that I was becoming less social by Day #6, the nausea and mood was getting increasingly worse by Day #8. Yesterday (Day 12), I recognized that I was very withdrawn and extremely angry (I'm rarely angry and NEVER violent...could have become violent very easily yesterday. I was definitely ready to go postal over any trivial item). This mood would have cost me my job and my marriage very quickly if it continued.
My situation could be different since I am on Lexapro for depression and it works relatively well for me.
For me, I decided that I had to do something different. I skipped my evening dose, committed to go the gym this morning (first time in a year) to work the anxiety out, and I feel fantastic (all without nicotine). Granted, I have been nicotine free for only 5 days, but it can't be worse than what I went through on Chantix.
A few positives came out of this experience:
1.) I would never have made it cold turkey without nicotine for 3 days without Chantix, so it did get me past the physical addiction portion. At this point, I'm at Day 5
2.) Some of the most fantastic dreams I have ever experienced
I wish everyone luck here on the board. Sounds like a great drug for some people and a very dangerous drug for others. Make sure to let friends and family know if you are taking it so they can monitor your behavior.
Did you just stop taking the evening dose or did you stop chantix all together.

I used Chantix back in May of 2008 to quit, and I did. Smoke free for almost 2.5 years after smoking a pack a day for 26 years. I am a believer in the product, but wonder at what cost? I have some serious issues going on, and the doctors can't seem to find anything wrong with me...healthy as a horse.

1. I really suffer from lack of patience anymore. Little things, stupid things, just get me angry. Road rage is terrible, even when someone simply doesn't use a turn signal.

2. Constant headaches...although minor, are really annoying. Doctor says it's stress, which I have never had in 39 years prior to Chantix. I can't even have more than a few beers and I have a migraine for days.

3. Constant dizziness. I always feel like my head is slightly spinning, or light headed. I can't remember anything short term and get distracted so easily. I always seem to be in a daze if I'm not truly focused.

I am just wondering if anyone else is having these same symptoms?

over 2 years and this is still happening...I just wonder what the really long term affect is going to be.

Found this blog b/c not feeling well due to taking Chantix....
After reading so many issues people are having and already feeling practically like I am dying I have decided to stop taking the Chantix.
I am in my 3rd week but due to missing the evening doses on a number of occasions, just finishing up the second pack. Took only one today, plan to take one tomorrow. Do you think I can then reduce it to 1/2 a pill for say 3-4 days and then to a 1/4 for about the same time and finish it?
The stories i have read here are down right scary and i want off ASAP! I'll deal with stopping smoking in another way. Not this way.
Any advice is appreciated - Karen

Yesterday I got out of the hospital with acute pancreatitis, went online to see if this was a side effect of Chantix, it did appear in the "rare" side effects list. WOW, even 2 out of 3 ER docs said Chantix does not cause it, but one of them said it could! I started Chantix on Sunday before Thanksgiving, and by Thanksgiving Thursday I was so sick, with headaches, extreme hot spells where my whole body would feel like I was on fire and I was sweating heavily, nausea, anxiety, joyless, not really depressed but I would say joyless, I had no joy in anything! But I went on taking the Chantix thinking it would pass but then the pain started and I ended up going to the ER on Saturday with nausea, headache, pain on my right side and generally feeling sick like the flu but not vomiting. Diagnosis was acute pancreatitus, they did an ultrasound, CT scan, blood and urine tests and couldn't find a reason for it, and I am not a drinker at all which is a common cause of it. CRAZY.....so I stopped the Chantix while in the hospital and now it is Tuesday night and I am feeling much better. I am no doctor but I would say the the cause of it is the Chantix. I am still not 100% better but I am slowly feeling better and I am not joyless either! I really belive I found the cause! Too bad cuz I am still smoking, but I will try again with another method. Looking forward to the hospital bill I will get for this trying to quit escapade!

I took Chantix. It did help me quit smoking and it worked rather quickly. It wasn't a struggle like it would have been normally. This was a couple years ago. The terrible part about it was I came down with acute pancreatitis. I am not a drinker. There was no other explanation for why I came down with this. I nearly lost my life. I was in the hospital for eight days. This was a very scary time for my family. I simply went into the doctor because I had upper abdominal pain that was into my back that just got worse and I just could not deal with it any longer. Good thing I went in. Chantix did this to me. I just wanted to share my story for anyone who may be wondering about their own situation and needed a comparison or was thinking about taking this drug.
WOW I pretty much had the same experience but I was not successful in quitting smoking. Glad you are OK, and you ended up a non-smoker out of the ordeal. Wish I could say the same. But this pretty much proves that I was right, the Chantix caused my acute pancreatitis too. It is crazy how bad this drug is, and it is still being sold! They have to be able to find an alternative to this drug that can help us that still smoke but would rather smoke than suffer through the side effects of the Chantix!

Chantix works! I have very few cravings, as I have been on it for almost three weeks and I am successfully 3 days smoke free, and feel it will go on. I do have side effects, such as anxiety, im tired easily, not as hungry, and feel more angry. I am always the happy girl, and this med makes me feel blah. BUT It's worth it. Good luck every one!!!!

My wife started Chantix on January 10th of 2011 and stopped on February 16. She was constantly angry and extremely disconnected from me. We have only been intimate once from the usual twice a week. She has not touched me before or after since Chantix. I have no idea who this woman is, whom I have known for over 15 years. She stopped talking to most of her friends except a newer friend. She spends most of her time with her, and is shocked by my "who are you?" and "What happend to you?" questions.
We did not have a perfect marriage like others say, yes we fought but never were mad more than a few days no matter how dumb we acted. After the 2nd day she acts if I don't exist, so many little mannerisms of hers have changed I do not know who she is. Today is the first day we have not fought but I can clearly see how this poison has changed her.
I can recommend this product to any woman who clearly wants to push away her husband, emotionally and physically. This drug is the best "get out of love immediately" drug. She forgets things regularly, short term things that have happened since she started taking this crap. I would not be shocked if she started to write with her left hand while spewing green vomit, she has a possessed look on her face.
Ladies--if you want to move on and replace your husband this stuff will eliminate all feelings of love, tenderness, intimacy and yes sex. The one time in 6 weeks we had sexual intercourse I did not recognize her actions and it was terrible. I want my wife back please but I will tell you a week off this stuff did nothing so far.
She has told me how because of her sense of smell returning, she has said in the meanest of ways, "Uugghhh, you stink". I repelled her away with my very essence. She has called me a coward, something she would never do, because I won't leave her; she is not having an affair nor is she interested in anything physical.
I am shocked I have made it this far with not so much as her hand touching mine, a hug or snuggle. I tried spooning (yes I spoon, of course hoping to be intimate) and she complained on everything I did and how I did it. Nothing is done right and she has insulted my ability to be a father and husband. If you think it cant happen to you, your foolish in many ways. It can and did happen to me and I am still bewildered by the behavior of this woman I am living with and wondering, sticking around and hoping my wife returns to me someday.
I have kept a journal written in my hand, now archived for my children to read long after I am gone, I don't know how this chapter will end but only hope my children don't still hate Chantix, as they are teenagers and are not stupid, just naive as to how something like this could take their mother and change her. Funny this crap did not make my wife distanced with the children, only me and her old friends.
So many people tell stories of marriages ending in this fashion and never taking Chantix. Its such a surreal story even for me to type. I wish you a better healing than what my wife is getting.

Sounds like your wife should stop taking the Chantix immediately, it is a very powerful drug as you obviously can see. Sure its great if she can stop smoking but at what expense, losing the love of her life, I doubt anyone would trade that. She sounds like she has completely changed her personality and that can't be a good thing for a drug to do. My doctor finally admitted that the Chantix had caused my illness and so now I feel slightly vindicated but it was still a horrible experience and I would tell anyone using it to watch for physical and emotional changes and if any are experienced STOP TAKING IT IMMEDIATELY!!! There are other ways to quit smoking if you are really determined to quit. Good luck to you and your wife!

Chantix is a wolf in sheeps clothing. The drug does things to the female hormones but I am not sure what yet. She doesn't need sex as chantix is providing the dopamine to satisfy those urges. Here are a few links to the lastest news on chantix.

"They noted that the patient population was predominantly middle-aged women, but “an unlikely age group and sex for assault and acts of violence toward others.”

http://www.pharmalot.com/2010/07/chantix-and-...

"The same group of researchers released a report in July detailing the risk of violent and aggressive behavior on Chantix, which found that people affected by the drug had the tendency to lash out at anyone nearby, including loved ones and family members."

On Day 14 of Chantix, have not quit smoking. Still smoke about the same amount as before Chantix. Is it worth staying on it? I notice most people have quit by the end of the 1st week. Side effects for me are extreme tiredness, stomach upset and vivid dreams.

Sorry no males have answered or admitted to this side effect of chantix. Here are a few links to support your experience and link it to chantix.

"Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD), originally called Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS) and also known as Restless Genital Syndrome or Mempin Syndrome (ReGS or RGS)[1][2], results in a spontaneous, persistent, and uncontrollable genital arousal, with or without orgasm or genital engorgement, unrelated to any feelings of sexual desire.

In one recent case, serendipitous relief of symptoms was noted from treatment with varenicline, a treatment for nicotine addiction.[13][14]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pgad

On the special I saw this on the woman decided taking chantix was worse the this disorder. Note varenicline is chantix.

"A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be nicotine acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and interfering with the inflammation-related disease process, as nicotine has vasoconstrictive effects.[66]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine

This is listed under theraputic uses for nicotine. Since chantix is made from the closest chemical relative to nicotine, cytisine, it is easy to assume it also has a similar mechanism of action.

I hope you will stop using chanitx and find another way to quit smoking as it is only a more harmful substitute for nicotine in my opinion. It is your choice to risk it but who wants to quit enjoying sexual arousal?

Well there was an improvement after 5 days off the poison but there is many items listed in original post that are still there. There are a few who see the behavior change, but it never dawned on me until you stated it, wife had a hysterectomy about 3 yrs ago, even though she is almost 37. I also hope our marriage lasts, its tough even without chantix. Big pill companies know there is inherant risk, this particular one easily could be top my list. In an ironic twist of events after 6 years of me not smoking I nearly stopped for a pack of marbarlo reds, now I am the one screwed up!

i started taking champix in july of 2007. what i did was take it normally the first week, i had quit by then as my smokes tasted like turpentine and other gross stuff. well i quit and continued full dose for another week after that, my stomach was totally grossed out. so i quit. i didn't smoke after that, after finding out my son had type I diabetes and lost my job. but then i started again because i'm an idiot. i have been depressed since i lost my job. not sure if it's the champix or the situation. i'm thinking about going on it again and just stopping it once i quit. for maybe a week and a half. the spot right before i started feeling bad stomach issues.

i had wickedly cool dreams. orgasms when i pee'd.

don't mind having that again. heh.

not the stomach stuff though, that went on after i went off the stuff too.

I used Chantix about 2 years ago to quit and from what I remember it worked great for me. I don't rememner any major side effects. But divorce happened, forclouser on the house, laid off from my job of 24 years, kids hating me because of the talk their father was giving them and I started smoking again.
Last week I started Chantix again. This time I get really bad stomach pains right after I take them. It is worse now that I am on the 1mg. I feel loopy and tired all the time but it hits me with in 10 minutes of taking the pill.
6 years ago I had gastric bypass surgey. I am wondering if the meds effect me differently. I know the effects come on quicker but could they be stronger?

Hi all,
I started Chantix about five weeks ago. I quit smoking after the first week and have not had a single cigarette since. Although the Chantix worked wonders to help me quit, the side effects for me were too awful to continue with it, and I stopped taking the drug last week. Still not smoking, which is the only good thing to come of it all.
I have never been an anxious person, and as soon as I started taking the Chantix, my anxietly level shot through the roof, and I started having multiple panic attacks every day. I could not function at home, and I could not function at work. I smoked for 20 years and have never had nicotine withdrawal like this during previous attempts to quit, so I am certain this was a Chantix side effect.
Things came to a head last Wednesday, where I had one panic attack after the next at work, up to the point that I had to run the the restroom multiple times with dry heaves. I started crying uncontrollably and left work early. After yet another sleepless night, I decided to quit taking the drug (and this was after I had already reduced the dosage in half for a week in hopes the side effects would be less severe). I felt so bad and so depressed that I actually sought out psychiatric help becuase I thought I was completely losing my mind, and for the first time in my life, I was entertaining suicidal thoughts.
Well, that was last Wednesday. By Friday, the fog had lifted, and I was almost manic with relief. The panic attacks evaporated, and most of the anxiety disappeared. I'm still suffering from some depression and will continue to see a psychiatrist, but the relief from stopping this medication was almost overwhelming.
This was a truly scary experience -- knowing that a drug can do that to you. Reading other posts, I know that many lucky people don't suffer from severe side effects, but I did, and it ranks up there as one of the worst experiences in my entire life.
Best of luck to all who continue with the drug, and I hope you are one of those people who don't suffer from such severe side effects.
Chantix is a drug not to be taken lightley and does have side effects that are not reported...I myself have been on the drug for 2 month i quit smoking on the 5th day and was a heavy smoker for 30 yrs,i was diagnosed with COPD and had to throw them down...
side effect very from person to person with me sleepless nights felt like my scalp was crawling and that was on the 1 m twice aday so i cut it back to 1m aday but now its been 2 months with the drug in my system and im felling week and light headed at timess thinking about dropping the drug altogether, but as i stated in my opening statment the drug veries on sideefects from person to person best of luck and i hope u do stop smoking as far as im concerned the tobaco companies should be suid for putting out such a vile and addictive drug such as cigs ,Iknow I know it our choice to smoke or not just a thought ....ok ill stop ramblin lol
