"I am really good at quitting. I've done it a tho9usand times" This time i did! I have been taking Chantix regularly, according to the prescrpton, for 3 months on Monday. I have not had, or wanted, one puff of a cigarette, even around my smking friends at clubs, ect. Just haven't wanted one. I was taking 1mg in the am and 1mg in the pm until last week. I started .5 grams twice a day last week and now I have .5 gram in the morning only. I do seem to be a little more prone to pessimism, but that could be my urgent preparation for my students high stakes tests, teaching 4 subjects in 2 grades in middle school, the economy or other factors. Certainly no depression. Perhaps an absence of happiness. Chantix has halped me to quit smiking wih little or no side effect, other than a lighter wallet, more excercise and better breath.

Hi Ex smoker dj k - KATHY has moved over to the thread that I'll post below for you. It would be great to have you join the new & more seasoned quitters on that thread.

We have two Kathy's who have joined the discussions over there lately. KATHY & kathyinpa - KATHY has already quit & kathy will be quitting in the next short while.

The support on these threads is what has kept me smoke free for over 14 MONTHS after smoking for over 40 years.

I took almost 3 weeks of Chantix to quit a light running smoking habit. I had to quit it 3 days ago due to an allergic reaction that made me break out in hives all over my arms and torso and made my face swell up like a beach ball(had to get a steriod prescription from my Dr. to bring the swelling down) Also made me feel a little bit insane and like I had itchy bugs under my skin and now, while weaning myself off, my knee joints really are achy. That being said, I have no desire to smoke at all. The idea seems really nasty to me. When I was on the Chantix it seemed like everything smelled really intense-organic and frequently really disgusting too. Hopefully the aversion to smoking will remain, but I still don't feel quite normal....

my long term side effects are not extreme but have ruined my life. I do not feel myself mentally or physically. I just miss feeling normal. Has anyone been to a doctor that agrees with them and offered any hope for a cure to these side effects? Has anyone had an MRI that found something wrong?
Are the damages permentant?
Yes, doctors agree but have no cure, only offer more pills and tests. If you can afford them after it ruined your life great if not, sorry for you. You might want to try alternative medicines and change to a doctor who does agree rather then ignores your concerns. Yes, MRI showed brain tumor. Other changes have remained so may be permanent probably due to the action of chantix being an antagonist. Chantix effects the a7 receptors in ways no one knows but as long as people keep taking it they will eventually figure it out with enough guinea pigs.

Chantix (Varenicline) is a nicotinic receptor "Partial agonist". In this respect, it is similar to cytisine and different from nicotinic antagonist, bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban), and nicotine replacement therapies

did you have an MRI because of chantix or for some other reason? I have a problem with walking (off balance) so I am considering an MRI.

Hi,
Please call your doctor today. You could really get in to trouble if you stop the chantix abruptly. You could probably benefit from cutting the dosage and weaning off of it. Here' a schedule that worked for a whole lot of people:

2 weeks 1 mg 2x daily
1 week 1/2 mg 2x daily
1 week 1/2 mg only daily for a week
1 week 1/4 mg only for a week
1 week 1/4 every other day for a week
Then off Chantix

Cutting the dosage gave a whole lot of people relief almost immediately.

Good luck!

I recommend weaning yourself off of the Chantix right away. I started Chantix New Year's Eve and was off of it and done smoking by the end of January. I'm still not smoking but the lasting side effects from Chantix have ruined my life! Go see your doctor right away. They put me on Zoloft and keep uping the dose. I've never been on "happy" pills before but I could tell a HUGE difference in just a few days. I know exactly how you feel right now and the biggest thing you need to know is you're not alone! Although the Zoloft has helped some, I'm not sure I'll ever be back to normal again.

Hello, My name is Leanne age 28, and I happened to find this forum. I have been on chantix for over a month and I am a wreck. I'm going through the vivid dreams, shakes, anxiety, bad nausea flu like when i take the pill and I hate my husband for no reason. I have become a complete bitch to him and to our business partner. I knew this was not right and decided to look up the side effects. At my last visit 2 weeks in taking the pill I told my doc that i felt jiddery and would have like waves of suddenly things not seeming real. WEIRD. So what he did was put me on cloazapam to take with the chantix to help calm me down. Works ok. But it puts me to sleep and i'm already tired. My next appointment if i make it that long, i'm going to tell him I want to get weaned off of the pill. I have no cravings and wonder why i need to take it if i have absolutly no cravings? That and I would never touch another cancer stick again. That and I think about all my relatives that have died of lung cancer. I come from a family of smokers. 1 out of 10 people in my family is a non-smoker. No wonder I picked up on the habbit?

My husband and I only took Chantix for a month, our doctor said we didn't need to do the continuation if we felt we were done. When I told my doctor about my rage, agression, suicide thoughts, depression, anxiety, hating my husband for no reason and wanting a divorce and on and on and on - he was nice enough to say it was because of my weight which only made me go home and cry and be more of a mess. I too knew there was something wrong, as my sypmtoms got worse after stopping the Chantix. A friend recommended her doctor and I went and she immediately knew what was wrong. She said my brain was stuck in withdrawal and I needed something to fill up my seretonin levels. She put me on Zoloft (50mg) and after just a couple short days I was feeling great - almost like myself again (my husband did a big sigh of releif). However, the Zoloft made me not hardly sleep for a few days and I was all jittery inside - it was weird but the DR warned me about it. After a week she had me start taking 100mg which meant I had to go through the whole sleep deprivation again. I made the mistake of starting my dosage on Saturday and the meds have a 72 hour effect (or so I've since read) and I was practically non functional due to lack of sleep come Tuesday and Wednesday. Once I did sleep I slept for close to 20 hours or more. The doctor has now been having me play with the dosage until I feel comfortable. The 100mg got to be too much for me because it makes you feel really tired but if you can get moving, you have more energy - it's just the getting moving thing. My husband would literally have to pull me out of bed in the morning to get me going. I went back down to 50mg which helped but some of the rage and such started in again. I'm now at 75mg and feel pretty good with the exception of being tired. I asked the doctor if my brain was permanently messed up and if I had to be medicated the rest of my life. Her feelings unfortunately are that I'll have to take Zoloft now forever. Hang in there - it's not you - you're not alone. Tell your husband to grin and bear it until you can get it fixed. Go, RUN to the doctor and get started on some Zoloft. Stop taking the Chantix. Although I miss smoking, I don't crave it and am glad I quit - I just wish I had known of the possibilities and I would have quit another way. My husband however had absolutely no side effects from the Chantix. I saw where you also have the severe nausea. I did too. I literally had to carry crackers with me everywhere I went. When I took the pill I had to have several bites of bread, crackers, bagel or something with some substance, I then took the pill and immediately had to take more bites of food. Good Luck - let me know what you find out.

Chantix is the problem and you should change doctors. The thought that this is how some doctors MONITOR people who they give drugs to ...

This idiot made you a Pfizer customer for life. You might look into a lawsuit against Pfizer for their drug chantix causing your depression.

I am sorry so many people have had such a horrible experience with Chantix. I had many of the symptoms people describe here to some degree - the nausea has probably been the worst of them. I am now in my 4th week of using Chantix and I "nearly" quit using it but decided to stick to it since I had read on forums that the side effects are different for everyone and not everyone has a horrific experience. I am here to tell anyone who cares to know that I am glad I toughed it through because the side effects did go away for the most part. The first 10 days were the worst. I had extreme nausea but never threw up and one day of dizziness that became so bad that I had double vision, a day or so after I began taking the full dose, and the stop smoking day, I had a few days of extreme agitation and felt as far unlike myself as I ever have. That was the point that I wanted to quit because I didn't like being in my own skin, but after the second day of that it started fading away and so did the nausea. I cheated in those early days in the mornings, because that is when I usually smoked - for more than 20 years. This is when you take it, so I was trying to smoke when my blood was absorbing the medication - and it was what was making my nausea so bad.... doh! Around the 14th - 15th day I simply didn't feel like smoking anymore - not even in the morning, if I lit up out of habit it burned away in the ashtray or I simply put it out.

I have tried everything I know of to quit over the years and despite the fact I hate being a smoker and hated myself for being too weak to quit. That compelled enough shame in me to not quit trying to quit. Chantix, as bad as the side effects are, isn't as bad as being a smoker is to me, so to me, it was worth toughing out the side effects to get to this side where for the first time I actually believe I have beat cigarettes.

I just want to warn many of you who read all these posts about negative effects not to allow other's experiences to scare you away from having YOUR OWN experience. If you are in the early days of Chatix and are having a tough time of it I urge you to give it a few more days and if you are cheating - stop it! you'll feel better with NO nicotine in your system. Also, keep in mind that Chantix isn't going to shield you from ALL withdrawal symptoms, it is not magical. You are going to have some bad days, your going to be moody and pissy sometimes, you are even going to feel depressed and have night sweats and vivid dreams - because some people experience those things during cold turkey withdrawal. Nicotine and all the other 100's of other toxins in cigarettes have to clear from your body and it ain't pretty - drink lots and lots of water and take antioxidant supplements to help rid them from your system sooner.

Remember, your experience can be different from other people's. My Doctor doesn't work for the drug companies, he doesn't over prescribe, or push Chantix, but when I ASKED about it he gave me ALL the info I needed about it. Having read all the horror stories I asked how many of his patients he'd prescribed it to quit smoking and he said 100 percent. That was enough for me. To be honest with you he was NOT comfortable prescribing it to me because I am bipolar and already take psych meds to control that condition. He told me he wanted me to talk to my psychiatrist about it first, so I did. I spoke with her and her department head. They agreed to let me try if I told someone close to me what I was doing and to help me monitor my reactions to the drug for mood or behavior changes. I told my son and I began. I don't find that unreasonable for ANYONE taking Chantix.

So don't think if you are already on psych meds you can't use Chantix to quit smoking. I take 200 mgs of Lamictal daily as well as 40 mgs of Lexapro (in case you want to know).

So, I am extremely happy right now and wanted to share some positive experience amongst all the negative reports here.

Thank you,I'd be happy to post elsewhere if it would be helpful for others.

Also, I wanted to add just a bit to what I said above about my rationalization for sticking to something that can have side effects as awful as Chantix can.

I think of these side effects as a negative reinforcement to quit smoking. As bad as have felt at times I imagine that going through chemo or radiation therapy for cancer would make me feel as bad, and very likely much worse in all regards - psychologically and physically. At least with Chantix I know that it is temporary and it will ultimately reduce the likelihood that I will have to experience chemo because I didn't quit.

This mindset and the need to stop loathing myself for being a smoker got me through the worst of it.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Aries

There is minor evil around today, whether it is harsh words or actions. Relationships with non spiritual people will tend to be abrasive, as you come to understand that such people can never be trusted, for their agenda is not love. Beware of criticism from colleagues or friends. Avoid being narrow minded and confining your views to the conventional. You may want to argue with everyone and everything, but beware of devouring your own energy in the process.
