Chantix dosage - 2mg to start off?

Hello all,

Great information and words of encouragement around here. I had a quick question since there seem to be an abundance of Chantix users around here.

I just picked up my script last night and for some reason I was prescribed the 'continuous pack'(all 1mg pills). The directions on the label say to take 2 a day. This contradicts everything else I have read about this drug. It seems like I was supposed to start with the 'starter pack' which is a significantly lower dose to get me started.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks.

colby,

I would call your Dr first to see exactly what he prescribed for you.

You should start off with the starter pack. Maybe the pharmacist goofed .

All 1 mg pills are for the continuing pack not the starter.

yes they should have given you the starter pack. maybe your Dr. wrote the prescription wrong or the pharmacy just screwed up. either way, if you don't want to bother with getting a new scrip you can turn that pack into the starter pack. here's how:

Days 1,2 & 3: take 1/2 of the pill once a day

days 4,5,6,7: take 1/2 of the pill twice a day
(I took mine around 8am and the second around 3pm to avoid insomnia)

day 8 onward: 2 full pills twice a day

I'm sure you'll get more answers to this but I'm pretty sure that's how the starter pack was.

OK so it's absolutely safe to cut the pills in half?

I'm not a fan of taking pills in general so I was a little put off at the thought. But if it's safe, I think I'll be fine with it.
Has anyone else actually cut them personally?

Colby,
Go to the Pfizer URL listed below to see what the dosage should be for the starter kit. Then you can cut your pills in half and follow the starter kit dosage for the first seven days.

I think every singe one of us cut the pills at some point- mostly when we were weaning off of chantix at the end.

oops, I forgot to add that you should call your Dr. to double check on cutting the pills.

I'm going to suggest again about calling your Dr.

Yes~ lots of us have cut the pills in half but that's after doing the first week with the .5 mg pills. We usually cut them in half because were starting our wean.

Colby hasn't started the meds yet. Please check with your Dr first before cutting them.

Thanks for all the help. Sounds like I'll have to give the doc a call.

Colby, it may not be an error, keep an open mind. Like I said, I started on the "continuous pack"

I must have missed your original post. How did you start with the continuous? 1mg 2x per day? Or did you cut them in halves?

OK I just got off the phone with the doc.
They purposely prescribed the continuous pack for me to start on.

Like I said... Keep an open mind. A lot of people will tell you there is 1 way and 1 way only to take this medication. That simply is not true, and they are now finding the prescribing information should not be a one size fits all deal. Speak with your doctor and ask him/her if they did indeed want you to start on the 1 mg 2 timaes a day.

I just wanted you to know there was someone else out there that was started that way. And I was on that dose for a month before I quit smoking.

Denise: I just spoke with my pharmacist who has been with me since day one of this journey. She agrees that Pfizer needs to be more direct with physicians on prescribing this medication and that one dose does not fit all. She stated that if a patient came in with a script with Colby's type of prescribing information she herself, as the pharmacist, would call the physician and discuss the dosing with him/her. She felt that way she could be sure there was not an error of confusion on the part of the Dr. and also understand the reasoning behind the dosing. She does this becuase there is a lot of confusion among physicians as far as the Chantix is concerned.
Any chance you know the deciding factor for different starting doses?
At first I thought maybe it was weight, but the woman that suggested it to me outweighs me by a few and she was started with the starter pack.
She did start about 6 months ago, however. Perhaps it's changing with time...

Hope,
You have to realize that, when I posted that first response, there were no responses showing yet. It takes about six to ten minutes for new messages (posted by other people) to appear. Hope you keep that in mind when others post similar messages that you've posted at about the same time.
wait! I was serious. thank you for giving him somewhere else to check out the dosage. Cause that would really suck if he followed my post and the info was not right. Guess I should have looked it up myself, just didn't think of it.

I can imagine. I think they are learning along the way.

I really do not know what the deciding factor with my doctor was. I went to a tobacco intervention program and the physician there prescribed it that way. Is your doctor a researcher or specialist in the field?

Trish: I know where the message was directed and quite frankly I don't care who you would have directed it to...it was just meant to start something. Why...? You didn't say anything to Deb when she said it's perfectly safe to cut the pills in half when we all know these pills are not 'scored' meaning they are not meant to cut in half. Yes, we are all doing it but none of us know if it's perfectly safe. So if you're going to jump on someone's medical information then don't be selective and jump on everyone who posts what could be misinformation. Including you good buddy and clone, Deb.
I don't think Deb wants to be Irashy's clone. It is just like the one or two outcasted people in school getting together to hang out. Remember what happened at Columbine when the out casted kids all got together? Seems like that is what has happen to our happy nice board.

Funny how talking about John Travolta was such a bad thing AND reading page after page of torturing your gyno with tacky comments is okay.
I am quite sure that looking at some old cooter up close ain't so grand for that Doc, YANNO?
Just reading some ofthe stuff made me want to "lean over the waste basket" & gag & drool" wishing someone would stop. or something...
