This forum is Immigration Reform, and this thread is about a budget crunch cutting illegal aliens' health care (which they shouldn't be getting anyway). It's not about education, war, or any of the other items you've listed. There are plenty of forums on Topix, and I'm sure you'll find one to cover each of those topics.

1 I don't use any illegals and I know plenty of people who have companies (lawn, construction, roofing, etc.) that don't use them. Of course, there are others that *do* use them, and I turn them in whenever I can find out enough information. When I had my house remodeled top to bottom, I asked about legality of workers when I got estimates. Anyone who hemmed and hawed about providing proof workers were legal weren't even considered. The prices were negligible in difference. Basically, the cheaper labor meant more money for the owner, not cheaper prices for the person needing the work done. I met some idiot the other night who was happy to brag about his boss hiring illegals, the one illegal making more than him (what normal citizen brags that an illegal makes more) and that they are ALL (citizens, illegals, whatever) paid cash under the table. I'll be finding out that guys full name and employer and turning them in to IRS and ICE. Enough people I am acquainted with know this guy, so it shouldn't be too hard to ask the right people and come up with the answers I need to turn them in. I told him straight up that I thought he was sick and needed to be turned in (for being paid cash under the table) and his employer for that and the hiring of illegals. He laughed because he thought I was kidding. |

1 Of course not ALL the problems stem from the illegals...just $23,000,000.00 (that's BILLION) we spent on them in Cali alone...money that could have gone to our schools or services for hard working AMERICAN tax payers...not to mention all the people they have killed or raped or stole from or ETC ETC ETC |

No, unless you have a comprehension problem, no one said illegals have caused all the problems in this country. The plain fact is, you are on an immigration reform forum, so that is what we discuss here. Immigration -- legal and illegal. It is also a fact that the illegals do not HELP, and they do HINDER. They are a factor in many bad things happening to and in this country, and if they were not here many of those things would be much better. |

Are you kidding? We did an immigration reform (a/k/a Amnesty) in 1986, with several smaller ones since that time, and all they did was cause more illegals to come. Beating a dead horse is ridiculous and unproductive. Thinking that we can do the same thing over and over and obtain a different result is just stupid. Now we need to try something new -- forget the PC crap, enforce our laws strictly and get them all the hell out of here. Attrition through enforcement will cause them to leave at not much cost to us. Many, many of them are using social security numbers that don't belong to them to work -- A FELONY! Felons don't qualify to come here. Why should citizens have to take responsibility for their law breaking and accept the consequences, while you advocate that illegals be rewarded for law breaking? Do you think *I* could use someone else's social (or a made up one) and get away with it or, better yet, be rewarded for it? I think not. The illegals that are working low paying jobs already find ways to get government benefits to subsidize their stay. THEY COULD NOT AFFORD THE TAXES YOU PROPOSE, and it would just turn around back on the tax paying citizen. What kind of logic is that? Low/no skilled people will always cost us more than they ever contribute, and the majority of the illegals here fall into that category. We have enough of our own homegrown in that category. We cannot afford to add more. We must get rid of them. It is far cheaper to deport them and secure our borders, as that is a one time cost. Keeping them will be a cost that goes on and on, not to mention every one of them will bring over many, many "relatives" (many of which are not really relatives at all). They all need to go. |

You gotta be kidding. You say we already tried this and we already tried that. We didn't strictly enforce the laws nor did we properly use the Border Patrol. We did Amnesty. Amnesty by itself got you the problem we have today.
You have to open up those little brains and expand your thinking a little. And regardless how strongly you feel about illegals. The root cause of this problem is not the illegals. The root cause stems from people using them and employing them. Only drilling deeper down, can you actually find the cause. Next time you have a head ache, just rip out one of your teeth. The problem must be that darn tooth. Why not just cut your head off while you are at it. I see very little in terms of solutions coming out of you. I see DEPORT, DEPORT, DEPORT, ENFORCE THE LAWS. I think we all get that. It isn't working, in case you haven't looked around you. Use whatever is between those ears to come up with something more constructive and useful. Peace! |

Ummm...no, it is not possible to hire people who are not here. VERY few companies actually recruit in Mexico (or any other country), and those who do would be easy to find and deal with. So, the only way the companies hire illegals is because the illegals apply. If no illegals were here to apply, they could not be hired. If you really want something from the store and they are out, as is every store in the area, you won't be able to get that item. If the illegals were not here, those companies could not hire them. Good people do not purposely break the law and then, on top of it, to demand a reward for their law breaking (and with exactly what they broke the law to get). WE CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER AMNESTY. We just cannot afford it, not to mention that it's a slap in the face to legal residents and those still waiting, paperwork filled out, in their own countries to come here -- if we reward law breakers. It makes no sense. We are still paying for the 1986 amnesty for God's sake! The vast majority of illegal aliens in the United States have immigrated for the purpose of having a better life, providing for their families, and escaping from poverty. These are good goals and motivations. However, these reasons do not give a person the right to break a law. Those seeking to immigrate to the United States (or any other country), should obey the immigration laws of that country. While this will cause delays and frustrations, again, these reasons do not give a person the right to break a law. |

My point exactly!
You are missing the boat completely. The root of this problem is our lack of ability to enforce the borders and to control our trade agreements. We allow our companies to manufacture things in Mexico and pay people $40/wk for lots of hourse worked. Would we settle for these types of work conditions here in the USA? The obvious answer is no. You are still trying to treat the symptoms, when you should be treating the problem. Yes, people are here and continue to come here. Ask yourself WHY. Why is what you have to be asking before you try to fix the wrong thing. I am not disagreeing that deportation is one part of the solution, however, you can deport people forever, unless you decide to also keep them out, you will be in the vicious cycle we are in now. And yes, all that stuff I talked about earlier has relations to illegals and immigration. There are ties to everything. Chill out a bit, take a step back, count to 10 and look at the Big Picture. |

The "Big Picture" is really small when looked at from a legal position. We must enforce our laws and stay legal. The rest will follow.

1 they can have their babies at our nice modern hospitals and sign the adoption papers and go back. There are a lot of Americans who would gladly adopt the American born babies. That would be a true act of kindness of the birth mothers. Leave their babies here and go back instead of clinging to them for the big welfare/citizenship payouts |

Simply enforcing the laws will not change things. You must restructure what is here. We have border patrol that don't do a very good job of patroling the border (reasons are limitless). We have laws that don't get enforced. We basically have a broken system.
When the system is broken, no matter if you look at it legally or as a "Big Picture", you still see a skewed picture. Boot! |

As of July 2009, California's budget shortfall was 49.3% of its general funds. States have considered drastic options to fill such gaps.
"I looked as hard as I could at how states could declare bankruptcy," said Michael Genest, director of the California Department of Finance who is stepping down at the end of the year. "I literally looked at the federal constitution to see if there was a way for states to return to territory status." There were no bankruptcy options, and the legislature chose to cut back sharply on education and health care to fill the gap. Mr. Genest already predicts the 2011 shortfall will outpace the projected $7 billion gap. It is a smaller deficit than this year's gap, but the choices will be more difficult because so many cuts have already been made. Mr. Genest estimated that, eventually, 40% of the state's budget would go to the state Medicaid program, 40% to education, 10% to debt service and 6% to retiree medical services and pension—leaving little left for anything else, such as the state's corrections system. |

1 I think I'll run a donut special. W/r to budgets being short. If the states don't have enough money to operate, they should cut personnel. These places should operate just like any company. If they are not able to operate on the budget that they have, they must lay people off. Welcome to the real world. |

Is the Hispanic vote SO large and powerful that our elected officials are scared to take action on this issue. It is running the state into the ground. Just how long do my tax dollars..and I pay a lot of taxes..have to go support a section of the population that is in this country illegally, contribute nothing to the cause (oops, I forgot about leaf blowing) and send their under the table wages back to May-hee-ko?
