Thousands attend permit hearings

The overflow from the packed 740-seat Charleston Civic Center theatre were not able to voice their opinions inside the public hearing held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers , but their message was loud and clear via signs, chants and the number of coal supporters which outnumbered those inside two to one.

It is a shame to look at this as one side against another. Our environment needs protection from MTR and if you can't see that then you are living in a fantasy world. We shouldn't be fighting over this but working together to come up with a better solution for mining. I love miners but I also love my environment and things can be done in a better way.

I was at the Ralley in Charleston. I was chanting along with my Fellow Coal Miner's as we Lined up to get into to speak. I am from Pikeville Kentucky, a 3rd Generation Coal Miner and very proud of it. God Bless everyone who proudly calls themselves a Coal Miner and their Family and Friends.

My husband is a coal miner and he is very smart, he has never hit me or my kids and is nowhere near bein a redneck. What are you mad because you got your card and no one would give you a job or was it that you just couldn't pass the drug test? People need to support the people in their community. We all need coal.. It IS our way of life here, God put the coal in our mountains for a reason, to USE it. In order to use it you have to mine it, to mine it you ave to have equipment, to keep those running you have to have mechanics. That's where my husband comes in. If he doesn't have a job my three year old baby girl goes with out the things that she need, as will most of the other people and their children that live here. If you don't like it, MOVE the hell out!

Do you think that coal miners don't have an EDUCATION? My husband works in a deep mine 6 days a week and is also a certified welder, certified electrician, and is a college grad.! My husband want's to go to college, he want's to become a doctor but how can he go when I earn $500 dollars a week we have a house payment well that's more than what I make, so I guess it's my fault. He's smart, and a good man, pays the bills and takes care of me and other people when he shouldn't have to. We're all tyrying to survive out here so don't be so quick to be a shithead, one day you might need someone to help you. It doesn't have to be money "what comes around goes around" just remember that.
