Lomtevas wrote: <quoted text> Likely not. A command level position in any organizational hierarchy requires superior writing and reading skills, superior quantitative analysis skills and steadily more complex assignments on the way up the ladder. Folks who cannot interpret upper echelon written guidance will necessarily fail in mid-level command. Such personnel will become bored with the work and seek to entertain themselves by way of sexually harassing others, setting up gambling pools and positioning others for promotion or ouster based upon overt favoritism. Very eloquent. Especially your ladder double entendre. I don't think this test was to select the next chief. And I think the citizens of Hartford want their mid-level firefighters to be able to rescue them, their families and their dogs out of a burning three flat. That takes, guts, instincts and a lot of physical ability.

Glasnos wrote: <quoted text> Don't know about college admissions ... but white women do qualify as minorities when awarding government contracts for instance. They also get extra consideration for factory floor work where males dominate the more strenuous work. White women have forced the lowering of standards in fire and police forces, claiming some of the strength requirements blocked women. And then there are women who now get college athletic scholarships for women's sports which exclude and protect against male competition. No such exclusion is allowed in male sports. I find it extremely unfair for a 9 yr old boy to lose out to a 10 yr old girl in little league ... and then that same girl is allowed to preclude male competiton on her tennis or golf team. I agree.

On the other hand, every firefighter needs to KNOW and UNDERSTAND how a three flat is structured, the fire codes and where the fire exists would be, how the building will burn, and what potential type of chemicals, paints, etc they will be up against. Wake up STOOGE!

Wake up STOOGE! I'm not assuming anything Shemp. I said a written test is not a complete evaluation of a firefighter's ability. Read before you write. And try to fix that first sentence of yours.

Nothing like trying to attack grammar when you don't even have a clue. Well done moron. Look up conjunction next time so you know how to use one.

So if somebody passes a test you assume they don't have they. I was referring your statement above. And it is acceptable to begin a sentence with a conjunction in a discussion.

Maybe if this was a VERBAL discussion rather than a written one, you'd have a leg to stand on with your reasoning about when to use a conjunction. conjuctions - Join words, phrases and clauses TOGETHER.

From cliffsnotes.com : Nothing is grammatically wrong with placing and or other coordinating conjunctions at the beginning of a complete sentence, although this practice should be used sparingly. Novice writers should be especially careful not to begin sentence fragments with conjunctions.

Some of you just don't get it. Change is here. The era of the racist capitalist white Republicans is over. They will be forced out of there seats of power. Now they must pay their public due for the stain of racism on their souls. A good way would be to volunteer to help minorities. These white men were not entitled to a promotion and they should not get one ahead of a minority. Here are 200 who should be signed up for inner city volunteer work programs right now, they must pay for their irresponsible behavior vs. minorities: http://www.nypost.com/seven/07052009/postopin...

Missy wrote: Let's not turn this into a bashing of affirmative action. For all those tempted to do so, please try and remember that white women have benefitted more from affirmative action than any other group of people. That being said, also remeber that Sotomayor was not alone in her ruling, there were 2 other judges who were in on the ruling. Since it was overturned by the justices 5-4, sounds like Sotomayor will be right at home as a supreme court justice. She couldn't possibly be any worse than Clarence Thomas anyway. But it is a case of Affirmative action. With all the stupidity in California, banning AA on the grounds that it is discriminatory is one of the things they did right. In my 15 years in HR, AA has never once benefited a white woman or white man, even if they are the most qualified. If you think it did, you must have voted for BO Hussein because you are easily fooled.
