I knew Mike for many years. The city department managers all raved about how good he was at his position and called him the best. He served for several years as the city's fire chief and it wasn't until after he left did anyone mention he was doing anything suspicious yet the accuser was also on the fire department in a managerial position and allegedly witnessed this activity for many years. Why is it that they didn't step up before it got to this level?
Now that the horse is out of the barn, the city is making changes to ensure our tax dollars are spent wisely? How is it that some of the items purchased were huge expenditures that somehow didn't get the scrutiny they deserved? City employees get clothing allowances where any purchase has to be justified, how is it that what Mike did not fall into that same realm of review?
So much of this smells of a lack of city oversight of tax dollars that maybe the State Auditor should ask for an investigation into the use of money by all city officials that were serving while McKinnon was doing these alleged criminal activities as well as those serving now and to see that our money is being spent properly.
