I hope this guy never makes it out of prison. Hopefully, the other inmates have already put a bounty on this idiot's head.

What a total jerk this guy is. Mr Berberian, put this TOTAL LOSER away for life, no parole, no time off, period. Really, there is no excuse, and obviously his 6 priors were no deterrent. Throw the damn key away!

This has to be one of the most heartbreaking stories in many years of Marin.
The terrible heartbreak for the family is beyond imagination, but may I send my support to the police, paramedics, fire, and fellow citizens who were first on the scene and had the courage to set their emotions aside until later that evening, in order for them to assist all at the scene that evening.
How they assisted the motorcyclist is beyond me...they're saints..Good people there that night..very good people...

Everyone is talking about traffic lights. If a stop sign doesn't stop a drunk do you think a red light will? I don't. But a round about will slow anyone down. They have round abouts in Petaluma and other citys and towns. San Marin drive has been used as a race track since the widing of the lanes. Do something about in NOW don't wait for another innocent life has been cut short.

I live very close to the site of where this tragedy took place.

Shaefer would not have been stopped by a traffic light. In fact, a traffic light might make some of the speeding that occurs on San Marin Dr. worse. The stop sign forces most drivers to at least slow down, while a green light would not. Rather than a stop light, speed bumps in front of the stops would remind most to slow down. Unfortunately, if 6 previous DUI didn't stop Shaefer, nothing short of locking him up would have either.

My heart breaks for Melody and her family.

How about three DUI strikes and you lose your license for life?

I think this waste of human life should be put to death. Drunks that kill should be put to death. But having worked in Corrections any child killer has a bounty on their head.

He'll be out in 3 years. Our state can't seem to balance the budget with the billions and billions they get from us, so instead, they're turning them loose.

"We're going to do all we can to see he gets what he deserves," Berberian said.

Wonderful, Ed. To bad your office didn't already do this for such an outrageous repeat offender. If you had, maybe there would be one more fourth-grader alive in the world today.

unfortunatley...if you will drink and drive and get 3 dui's - my guess is people wouldn't care about driving w/out a license. noone wants to make harsher dui laws because the reality is most people could be be arrested a lot of the time - those nice dinners out - or a beer with a friend after work - take a cab - always!!!!!

to commonsenseguy: he'll hire Geragos and won't do any time. In fact, the City of Novato will probably end up paying money to this 6-time POS for some lawsuit his lawyers will dream-up some defense regarding his innocence and blame the city for poor lighting/paint/road maintenance... BTW that corner is a frequent hiding spot for NPD cars and cycles where they cite moms driving their kids to school in the morning and dads coming home from work so the city would loose money if they put in stoplights - not a good thing in these budgetary times

Edward John Schaefer, 43, of Novato, murdered a 9 year old girl. Yes, murder. He had several prior DUI's. He knew what he was doing was wrong. Drunks never learn. I recently witnessed Roy Larue of Chico, owner of Butte Custom Repair, drink and drive while on probation for another DUI. Drunks need to be severely punished before they kill someone. Six prior DUI's didn't keep this low life scum Schaefer off the road. We had to wait until he killed someone. Let's pray that Edward Schaefer will do the honorable thing and kill himself.

Why is a guy with 6 DUI convictions still on the road, instead of being in prison?
He should have run into a tree or telephone pole instead.

There should be a 3-strikes law for DUI convictions - not just lose your license for life, but a $100,000 fine too. And if you kill someone, then life w/out eligibility for parole.

I'm in shock and horror that I recognize this man, a former acquaintance, and now instead of only rage and disgust toward him, I feel grief that this is where his life has gone. I have been praying for the victims and for justice in this situation, but now I am reminded to pray for this man, who is not a monster, but a fallen human being (as all of us are) whom I suspect, from what I remember of him, will not be able to live with himself when he finds out what he has done. I will still pray that he is brought to justice, but also for mercy and grace, that redemption and healing can come out of this horrific tragedy. The brokenness here is beyond my comprehension. 70x7.

Nice thought, but the loser would probably drive without a license. I'm certain his has been suspended or revoked numerous times because of his six 23152(a)&(b)convictions.

Good idea! My guess is losers like Schaefer dont care about following laws. He obviously has little regard for anything, other than himself.
